Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an iconic breed known for their long, low bodies and short legs. They are active and affectionate dogs, known for being loyal and intelligent. Dachshunds are a great companion for both adults and children, as they are a dog with a good temperament. Dachshunds like to have a lot of human contact, so if you are away from home often, it might not be the best breed for you.
Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic, and while every individual dog has their own specific reactions, they are not generally recommended for families with allergies, due to the potential of sneezing, watery eyes, irritated skin, or coughing due to their coats and dander. Though generally regarded as low-shedding dogs, they still produce fur and dander, which can trigger leukocytosis, an allergic reaction in humans caused by increased levels of a kind of white blood cell.
Dachshunds generally enjoy a variety of foods, however, there are certain items that should be avoided due to potential health risks that can be caused by certain ingredients or consistency of the food. Examples of foods to avoid for Dachshunds are grapes, raisins, and currants, which can cause kidney failure; chocolate, coffee, and coffee grounds, which contain theobromine and can be toxic to dogs; cooked bones, which can splinter and cause internal injury; and processed junk food, which can lead to obesity, diabetes, and other health issues.
Preparing your home for a new Dachshund involves making sure you not only have a comfortable and safe environment for your pup but also that you are fully equipped for their specific needs. To start, make sure you purchase a high-quality crate that's the right size for your Dachshund and line it with a bed and blankets for comfort and warmth. Secure upholstered furniture with chew guards or a thick slipcover to prevent future damage. Also, be sure to baby-proof your home to avoid any hazardous items within your pup's reach.
Dachshunds typically grow to an average size of between 8" and 9" at the shoulder, with adult weights between 16 and 32 pounds. However, sizes can vary some, depending on the lineage of the puppy. Generally, adult weights range from 11 to 16 pounds for miniature dachshunds and 16 to 32 pounds for standard dachshunds. Dimensions can vary even more, with miniatures typically reaching 8" to 9" at the shoulder, while standards are usually between 9" and 12".
Generally speaking, Dachshunds need a minimum of around 30 minutes of exercise each day, however this can change depending on your individual pup and their energy levels. In general, 30 minutes of exercise should be split into two or three smaller walks during the day, with shorter but more regular walks being beneficial. Also, it shouldn’t just be about going for walks mixing up activities is important for your Dachshund's mental and physical development, so try to include active play and running in the park.
Dachshunds are generally a great choice for first-time dog owners since they are intelligent and relatively easy to train. The Dachshund is a loyal and affectionate breed that tends to bond closely with their family and loves to spend time with them. This breed does well in small living spaces and can be equally satisfied in a tiny home or larger apartment. These curious little dogs require plenty of exercise, but they also adapt to being indoor dogs if their owners lack the time or ability to walk outside.
Training your Dachshund does not have to be an intimidating task. The key is to keep it consistent and fun while being sure to not overwhelm your pup. Start by dividing training into three areas: obedience, housebreaking, and socialization. First, begin with simple obedience commands such as sit, stay, come and down. Once your dog masters these, you can move onto more difficult commands, like rolling over or shaking hands. Secondly, practice housebreaking by using the same phrase each time and positively reinforce when the task is completed.
