Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a small, elongated breed of dog that originated in Germany. This breed has erect ears and a long, thin body shape, as well as short legs. Its business-like attitude gave it the nickname "sausage dog." Dachshunds are intelligent, loyal, friendly, and are often used as watchdogs. They come in three coat varieties; smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired, and two sizes: standard and miniature.
Dachshunds have a unique coat that is always relatively short, smooth, and glossy in texture. It is water resistant and easy to maintain, and so they don't require a lot of regular grooming. The outer coat is dense and has a slight wave, while the undercoat is soft, fine, and fluffy. Depending on the variety, the coat color can range from black, tan, and red to cream, blue, or a mix of combinations. One thing they all have in common, though, is that their tails are often with longer, thicker fur.
Dachshunds have some unique dietary needs, and owners should take the time to do their research before deciding what to feed their pup. A high-quality diet specifically formulated for small breed dogs is usually the best route, as it helps to provide the appropriate caloric intake and balance of proteins, healthy fats, carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals. If you don't have access to small breed-specific diets, you can also feed your dog a diet intended for all life stages. Ensure that only premium ingredients are used—a mix of grains, lean meat or fish, and vegetables.
Before getting a Dachshund, there are several essentials to buy. First and foremost, you’ll need to make sure your home is puppy-proof and that any hazardous objects or potentially dangerous areas are blocked off and kept out of reach. You’ll also need a leash and collar, water and food bowls, and a bed or crate. Bedding for the crate should be easy to clean and well-insulated. Toilet training supplies are essential too; puppy pads and newspaper can be particularly useful during the housebreaking process.
Dachshunds are a breed of smaller-sized dogs, but depending on the particular type, they can grow to be quite large. Standard dachshunds typically have a height of 8 to 9 inches with a length of 16 to 32 inches and an approximate weight of 16 to 32 pounds. Miniature dachshunds are generally 6 to 7 inches tall with a length of 11 to 14 inches, and an average weight of 8 to 10 pounds.
Walking your Dachshund for at least thirty minutes each day is recommended by experts to make sure your pup stays fit and healthy. If your pup is young and active, an hour of exercise is beneficial, as long as your pup is comfortable with that amount of time. If you are unable to commit to a solid amount of time each day, make sure you break the exercise up with short play sessions throughout the day, being sure to include some walking time in those sessions. It is also important to consider the temperature and air quality when planning outdoor walks.
Dachshunds can be great with children as they are loyal and energetic companions. Generally, Dachshunds are patient and loving pets that enjoy being around people, including children. They have playful attitudes which make them excellent family pets—especially if your family has enough energy to keep up with them. However, like with any pet, it is important to be extra careful around small children, as these dogs have long, delicate backs that could be easily hurt. Additionally, training is key for this breed so that they are well-behaved.
Training a Dachshund is a rewarding experience as the breed is an intelligent one. To have the best success, positive reinforcement and consistency are key elements. A Dachshund should start receiving basic training as soon as possible, whether it is with formal classes or just at home. Establishing boundaries and reinforcing expectations are important. Providing lots of positive reinforcement whenever correct or desired behavior is exhibited will be highly beneficial for the training process. Break down the desired behaviors into manageable tasks and be patient and supportive throughout the learning process.
