Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a unique breed with a captivating personality that makes them one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Despite being a small breed, they are often surprisingly strong-willed which can make training an enjoyable challenge even for experienced dog owners. They are also very loyal and wonderful companions that will truly become a part of the family. One of the most interesting things about Dachshunds is their distinctive appearance and body shape that make them immediately recognizable.
The Dachshund coat is short, smooth, and thick, typically a shade of red, black, or tan. You'll also sometimes find dachshunds that have white markings or a brindle pattern in their coats. Their coat needs to be regularly brushed and kept free of tangles to ensure the fur remains healthy and clean. Though their coats are simple, they do require a bit of upkeep. They can become dry and mangy if not groomed regularly, so ensuring your dachshund is groomed will help maintain their sleek and shiny coat.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything containing unsweetened chocolate, grapes, raisins, caffeine, or alcohol, as it can be dangerous to their health. Additionally, any bones, whether raw or cooked, can be a choking hazard and can splinter and damage the digestive system. Diet high in fat and/or sodium can lead to obesity and serious medical conditions. Certain fruits and vegetables such as onions, garlic, and avocados can also be toxic to Dachshunds so they should not be present in their diet.
Getting a Dachshund is an exciting new experience! Before bringing your new pup home, you should make sure you have the essentials for them. You'll need a collar and leash, food and water dishes, a comfortable bed or crate, plenty of toys, high quality food, and basic grooming supplies. It's also a good idea to pick up a poop scoop if you plan on letting your Dachshund roam freely in the yard. Other supplies you might want to consider include a brush and shampoo, nail clippers, a muzzle, and treats or chews.
The size of a Dachshund puppy varies based on its age, gender, and overall health. Generally speaking, adult Dachshunds stand between 8 and 9 inches tall and weigh between 16 and 32lbs; however, the average height of a Dachshund at full growth is 8-9 inches. When a puppy is born, they tend to weigh between 6-10 ounces, and can reach 22-24 ounces by the time they reach 8 weeks of age. Their rate of growth is typically most rapid between 4-7 months of age.
Dachshunds can certainly enjoy a swimming activity, however it is important to keep in mind that they are not natural swimmers. So, if you decide to take your Dachshund swimming, you should introduce them to the pool slowly and with lots of reinforcement. Start by giving them treats near the edge of the water and help them get their feet wet. If your Dachshund seems comfortable, gradually go further into the pool, but never leave them unsupervised. And be sure to use a life vest for extra safety.
Dachshunds can make wonderful family members who get along well with children. Generally, these dogs have calm and gentle personalities, love affection, and are highly intelligent. In addition, their even temperaments and loyal nature make them a great companion for families with children. Dachshunds tend to form close bonds with their families, and they look forward to spending time with their human counterparts. With proper training, these dogs can be taught to obey basic commands, such as come, sit, stay, and lie down.
Dachshunds certainly have their fair share of intelligence and can easily be trained to learn new skills. They enjoy using their powers of deduction and can often figure out solutions to problems quickly. From a behavioral perspective, these pooches are good at living harmoniously with their human companions, as they understand basic commands and cues quite well. Certainly, those with experience working with Dachshunds can testify to their high level of intelligence, especially when it comes to having an excellent memory and the capacity to learn new things.
