Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a unique and playful breed of dog that are classed as a hound. This means they are a member of a category of dogs bred to pursue and catch game, like rabbits. Dachshunds have a very distinct look, with short legs, long bodies, and floppy ears. They have loyal, affectionate temperaments and make great family pets. With their short stature they have been known to be able to fit into a wide variety of homes.
Although Dachshunds are classified as low-shedding breeds, they are not non-shedding. A few days out of the month you will be able to notice their coat's shedding and it's highly likely you will cover the furniture with dog hair every now and then, but in general, their shedding is low. To reduce the amount of shedding that Dachshunds release, it's recommended that they be groomed and brushed daily, as this will help reduce the amount of fur that is shed.
Dachshunds may differ when it comes to their dietary preferences, but they typically enjoy an array of wet or dry food. Wet food may include meat-based entrees and freeze-dried, raw, and freeze-dried raw foods. Dry food options may include kibble, grain-free formulas, or premium natural brands. It is best to offer your Dachshund a variety of food; they should typically have two to four meals a day consisting of both wet and dry food.
To best prepare your home for a new Dachshund, it is important to make sure to purchase the necessary supplies ahead of time. This includes food, treats, bedding, toys, a leash and collar, and any grooming supplies like a brush and nail clippers. Also be sure to make areas in your home accessible and dog proof for your dachshund. Make sure to block off any poisonous plants or hazardous materials and secure any trash cans or drawers that can be easily opened.
Dachshunds, also known as "wiener dogs," come in a variety of sizes. Standard Dachshunds, which are the most common, typically weigh between 16 and 32 pounds and measure 8 to 9 inches in height. However, the Miniature Dachshund variety is much smaller in size, typically weighing up to 11 pounds and measuring 5 to 6 inches in height. The third size is known as the "rabbit" variety, and is even smaller at 5 to 8 pounds and 4 to 5 inches in height.
Many Dachshunds enjoy taking a dip in the water. Although they do not have webbed feet, some Dachshunds have adapted to the water and have become quite strong swimmers. If a Dachshund is properly conditioned to the water, it might even enjoy swimming with its owner. It is important to introduce your Dachshund to the water gradually as part of its training to stay safe and get used to its environment.
Dachshunds are generally known to be fond of kids and they can usually get along well with them if they are raised from puppyhood together. Dachshunds make great family pets and can be very good companions to children if trained and socialized correctly. Though these dogs tend to be a bit independent, they are usually very patient and devoted to their families. However, it is important to always supervise any interaction between kids and any breed of dog.
Dachshunds can certainly be considered smart, especially when it comes to obedience training. With consistent and positive reinforcement, they can learn basic commands like sit, stay, and come. They are also known to be creative problem-solvers, often finding ingenious ways to get what they want. In addition, their loyal personalities and loving nature make them perfect lifelong canine companions. Dachshunds are also recognized for being alert, responsive, and eager to please, and socialize well with their owners, other pets, and strangers alike.
