Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an ancient breed of dog that have been around since at least the 15th century. Originally developed in Germany, this breed is classified as a hound, though not a scent hound. Dachshunds come in a variety of sizes depending on location. In the United States they are divided into Standard, Miniature and Toy sizes weighing up to 16 pounds, 11 pounds and 9 pounds respectively. Within each size, there are 3 coat types, Smooth, Longhaired and Wirehaired.
Dachshunds are not considered to be hypoallergenic dogs. Although they are considered to be low shedding, meaning that they do not produce as much fur as many other dog breeds, they do produce allergens that can trigger allergic reactions. Some dachshunds may be slightly less prone to triggering an allergic reaction due to their wiry coat or wire-like fur, but there is no guarantee that they will not cause a reaction.
Dachshunds, like most other small dogs, require a diet that contains a balance of meats, grains, vegetables, and fruits. A good quality commercial dog food tailored to the breed will provide your Dachshund the nutrients it needs as well as extra proteins and carbohydrates for energy and stamina. Supplementation with fresh fruits, vegetables, and fats such as boiled eggs, yogurt, or olive oil is also beneficial. When feeding your Dachshund, bear in mind the importance of moderation.
To prepare your home for your new Dachshund, it's important to create a safe and welcoming environment. Start by puppy proofing your home, eliminating any potential hazards that could harm your pup. Make sure any poisonous plants, electrical wiring, and hazardous items are out of reach. Also, if you have a backyard, ensure it's securely and safely fenced. Invest in a comfortable bed, chew toys, and appropriate items for your pup to use. Prepare basic necessities like food bowls, a collar, and a leash.
Dachshunds come in a variety of sizes, and it is important to know which size is most suitable for you. Although dachshunds all have the same body shape, they are divided into two main size groups. Standard dachshunds, often referred to as "long-hairs" regardless of actual coat type, usually range from 16-32 pounds and 16-32 inches in length. The miniature dachshund is slightly smaller, at 11 pounds or under, and can be 8-11 inches in length.
The amount of time you should devote to walking your Dachshund each day is somewhat subjective, as it depends on your dog's health and energy levels. Generally speaking, dachshunds require at least 20 minutes of exercise each day, although ideally they should have around 30 minutes. If your dachshund is low energy or has health concerns, you may need to adjust the exercise plan accordingly. You could always take them for a shorter walk in the morning and a longer one in the evening, which could be broken up into two 15 minute walks.
Dachshunds can be great with kids, provided they are well socialized and trained. With the right training, a Dachshund can adapt to the energy, activity level, and preferences of its family members; it becomes an important member of the family. That said, Dachshunds prefer to be with adults over children because they are so small. Adult supervision is important to ensure both the dog's safety and the safety of the children. It is essential to teach children how to cooperate together with a Dachshund and how to handle it with care.
Dachshunds have a sharp intelligence and can be highly trainable when motivated with treats and positive reinforcement. They demonstrate problem-solving skills, and can often learn commands, tricks, and even house-training rather quickly. Additionally, Dachshunds often display an uncanny awareness of their surroundings and can be quite intuitive and responsive to their owners. They can also remember past experiences and form long-term memories. With a little patience and consistency from their owners, Dachshunds can be quite intelligent and make wonderful companion animals.
