Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an intriguing breed, perhaps most notable for their unique build and body type. Their long, low bodies are often said to resemble their wild ancestor the badger and they have been bred since the 17th century for the purpose of hunting.
While there are no breeds of dog that are 100% hypoallergenic, Dachshunds are generally considered less likely to cause allergic reactions in sensitive people than other breeds. This is because they are a short-haired breed that sheds relatively little and they have a significantly lower dander (the tiny skin particles that can trigger allergies) level. While there may still be some irritants from these dogs, most of the time reactions to Dachshunds are less intense than with other breeds.
When choosing the best dog food for Dachshunds, it's important to consider the breed's specific nutritional needs. Dachshunds require an elevated calcium-to-phosphorus ratio to help protect the joints and promote overall health. It's essential to feed them a diet specially designed for smaller breeds, free of unnecessary fillers and with complete nutritional value. Also, look out for a quality source of animal protein, specifically poultry or fish. High-protein foods can help maintain muscle mass and keep their energy levels up.
Before taking in a Dachshund, there are certain items that are essential for proper care of the breed. A collar and leash are important for taking the dog out for walks or for letting the dog run around in a fenced-in area while being supervised. A bed and toys are also a must; both of these provide mental stimulation and comfort for the pet. Food and water dishes are necessary as well. Pet food appropriate for the Dachshund should be purchased, and your veterinarian may have suggestions for the best type of food as well as guidelines on portion sizes.
Dachshunds generally come in three varieties standard, miniature, and "tweenie." Though the minor size variations create different types of personalities within the breed, all Dachshunds have the same intelligence, activity level, and most importantly, the same sense of loyalty and companionship. Depending on the type of Dachshund, they usually range between 8 and 32 pounds (3.6 14 kg).
Dachshunds can enjoy swimming, although it is important to provide them with necessary precautions such as a life vest in order to keep them safe. While not all Dachshunds will naturally take to the water, many will enjoy getting in the water to cool off on an especially hot day. Not all Dachshuunds are good swimmers so it's best to start training them slowly and gradually work up to longer swimming sessions. Make sure to supervise your pet and to be mindful of the water temperature.
Dachshunds make wonderful companions for first-time owners. They are generally quite tolerant, affectionate, and enjoy lots of human interaction. Dachshunds are highly intelligent and can be easily trained with consistency and patience. They are relatively low maintenance and can adapt to a variety of living environments making them a great choice for the novice pet owner. As a small breed, they don't require a lot of space and love spending time with their owners. Dachshunds also have minimal grooming needs and can typically be exercised indoors or outdoors.
The amount of minutes you need to train your Dachshund each day will depend on a few factors. Most importantly, each Dachshund will have a unique personality and temperament which will impact how quickly they can learn commands. Additionally, the amount of time you have available to dedicate to training sessions each day will need to be taken into account. Generally, a minimum of 20 minutes of structured training each day is recommended for optimal results. If you grow the daily training sessions as your Dachshund's progress, then up to an hour a day could be beneficial.
