Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are one of the most interesting and unique dog breeds. Not only are they small-sized, but they also come in a variety of coat types and colors. Dachshunds are also well-known for their long, hearty barks that can reach up to 95 decibels! This breed was bred in Germany hundreds of years ago as a highly skilled hunter, and due to their size and badger-hunting instincts, they are not afraid to tackle any job, regardless of how big the prey is.
Although some Dachshunds can have a minimal shedding trait, most do present some level of shedding. This shedding will vary based on the coat of the Dachshund. Smooth-coated Dachshunds, for example, will shed less than long-haired Dachshunds. Dachshunds with wire-haired coats may not shed at all, or only a minimal amount. Regular brushing and vacuuming can help keep shedding in check.
Dachshunds require a balanced diet to keep them healthy and happy. The best choice for a diet is one that is designed for dogs of a similar size and breed, as it will contain the ideal nutrients for them. You also want to make sure the food contains enough protein and fiber, while avoiding too much fat. Some great options include high-quality dry kibble, canned wet food, and home-cooked meals that include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Dachshunds do have certain requirements that can be considered special compared to other breeds. Primarily, Dachshunds need plenty of daily exercise. They are active and curious, so an exercise regime of several walks and a few play sessions every day is recommended. Additionally, Dachshunds have a tendency to gain weight, so proper dietary control is important. Grooming can also be a special requirement of a Dachshund; regular brushing is necessary, and depending on their coat type occasional clipping or shampooing are recommended.
Dachshunds come in several different sizes from small to large. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes two sizes, which are the Standard and Miniature. Standard Dachshunds stand 8-9 inches at the shoulder and weigh 16-32 pounds; Miniature Dachshunds stand 5-6 inches and weigh 11 pounds or less. Another size variety is the ''tweenie'' which is a cross between the standards and minis, standing between 6 and 8 inches at shoulder, and weighing a maximum of 11 pounds.
While some dachshunds are naturally high-energy, speed-demon dogs, others are content to be couch potatoes. When determining whether your dachshund can keep up with you as you jog or run, always start slowly. If your dog appears to be struggling, it is important to take breaks and allow your pup to rest and catch his breath. Also, keep the surfaces you traverse in mind, as paw pads can easily be injured when running on hot pavement, gravel, or sand. It is wise to bring along water for your pup, too.
Dachshunds can make wonderful pets for first-time owners! They are loyal, loving companions that appreciate human companionship. Dachshunds are low-maintenance, clever, and affectionate dogs that are easy to train and are usually content to take strolls in the park or snuggle on the couch. With time and patience, felines can be taught basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay'. Dachshunds are also relatively small, so they can easily fit in urban dwellings.
Dachshunds are certainly capable of learning and have been known to take quickly to commands such as "fetch", "sit" and "stay." However, many experts classify them as loyal and trainable, rather than smart. They have an independent streak and may be stubborn at times, meaning extra patience may be needed to effectively train them. They are, however, intelligent enough to understand basic cues such as pointing and aiming towards their toys during a game of fetch.
