Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an intelligent, loyal breed of dog that make great companions! They are a short-legged, long-bodied hound with straight ears, a curved tail, and come in a variety of colors and patterns. Dachshunds are an active breed, so they need ample daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. They are friendly and can be quite playful, seeking out your attention and engaging you in fun activities. It's important to socialize Dachshunds early on to ensure they are comfortable around people, other animals, and different situations.
Dachshunds have a unique coat which can be smooth, wirehaired or longhaired. The smooth coated Dachshund has short and glossy fur which is smooth to the touch. It may have a slight wave over the back, but should be short over the entire body. The wirehaired Dachshund has a harsh, double coat with a soft undercoat and wiry outer coat. The coats of these type of dachshunds are wiry and naturally detangled.
Dachshunds should not be fed any type of chocolate, raisins, or grapes as these foods can be toxic to the canine's digestive system. Also, any type of human treats such as candy, gum, or baked goods should also be avoided. In addition, Dachshunds should also not ingest foods such as lactic acid bacteria, dairy products, or canned tuna as these can lead to gastrointestinal distress.
Before getting a Dachshund, it is important to purchase some essential items. Your Dachshund will need a comfortable and safe place to rest, so a crate or kennel, as well as a comfortable bed or blanket, is a must-have. Additionally, you will want to buy some toys and supplies for exercising and playing with your pup, such as chew toys, balls, and a leash. Dog food and treats are also vital items to have on hand.
Dachshunds generally reach full size between 7 and 10 months, but it is difficult to predict how big a puppy will be as an adult. Generally speaking, a full grown Dachshund can be anywhere from 6-9 inches at the shoulder, anywhere from 9-19 pounds and can be either short-haired, wire-haired or long-haired. It can take a bit of time and patience to see how much a puppy will grow, but monitoring their growth, providing them with a quality diet and plenty of exercise will help to ensure they will reach full size.
It is possible to take your Dachshund running, but there are a few things to consider. Dachshunds are smaller and quite energetic, so they do need quite a bit of exercise, but it's important to keep their stamina and age in mind when deciding how far and long to run. If your Dachshund is a puppy, it is not recommended to take them running due to their still developing skeletal structure. Adult and senior Dachshunds can go on regular jogs, but shorter runs are better to be done two to three times a week.
Dachshunds can be wonderful family companions, and depending on the individual pup, they may get along well with kids. Generally, they are friendly and affectionate with people they know. With adequate socialization and training, Dachshunds learn to be gentle and patient with children. Early and consistent exposure to children will help. It is important to remember that Dachshunds do not like rough handling, so parents should teach their children how to interact with the pup so that they can both have a positive and enjoyable relationship.
Absolutely! Dachshunds are known for being smart, independent dogs. With a strong desire to please their owners, these dogs are able to learn numerous tricks and commands, even some that are rather complicated. In addition to being intelligent, many Dachshunds possess a competitive spirit so they often take part in competitions and do very well. All in all, Dachshunds are an incredible breed with a brain and the willingness to learn, making them one of the most intelligent and most popular breeds available today.
