Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a small breed of lovable and loyal dogs. They typically need a lot of love and attention, as they are very active. They require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. A Dachshund's temperament can be quite stubborn, so it's important to diligently train and socialize them. Due to their short legs, they are low-impact dogs and therefore don't require strenuous exercise. Because of their long backs and short legs, they are prone to spinal problems so it's best to avoid excessive jumping or running.
Unfortunately, Dachshunds are not considered to be hypoallergenic dogs. While no dog is totally hypoallergenic meaning it won't cause an allergic reaction in all allergy-sufferers some breeds do produce less dander and saliva than others. Unfortunately, Dachshunds do not fall into that group, since their fur can be pretty high on the list of allergens. To find out if your allergies fit into this category, it'd be wise to consult with your doctor and/or an allergist before adopting a Dachshund.
Dachshunds are active, playful, and of course, adorable. To maintain their health and vitality, it's important to find them the best kind of dog food. For Dachshunds, high-quality, fresh ingredients like lean meats, fruits, and vegetables are key. Plus, look for formulas with low levels of sodium and fat levels, as well as low glycemic carbohydrates such as oatmeal, brown rice, and sweet potatoes to maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, omega 3 fatty acids are great for supporting a healthy skin and coat.
Becoming an excellent puppy parent for your Dachshund is an achievable goal. Firstly, it is important to learn about your puppy's particular breed so you can understand and cater to any needs your puppy may have. Secondly, make sure you plan ahead and set up a comfortable space for your puppy to explore and feel safe. Provide a variety of activities like fetch or walks to keep your puppy occupied and enrich their life.
Dachshunds come in two main sizes: standard and miniature. The standard size Dachshund typically weighs approximately 16 to 32 pounds and can measure up to 8 or 9 inches in diameter from the top of their head to the bottom of their tail. Meanwhile, miniature Dachshunds weigh anywhere from 8 to 11 pounds and measure 5 or 6 inches in diameter. Additionally, there is an even tinier variation of the miniature Dachshund called a "tweenie" -they typically weigh in between 4 and 6 pounds and measure between 8 and 11 inches in diameter.
Dachshunds are an active breed of dog, but they don't need excessive amounts of exercise. Generally, a good walk of about 30 minutes each day is enough to keep them healthy and fit. Depending on your dachshund's activity level, some may require longer walks or time outside to burn off energy. To ensure your dog is getting proper exercise, be sure to take plenty of breaks for them to rest, and provide toys or activities for them to engage in when at home.
Generally, Dachshunds can get along with children just fine, but there are some best practices to keep in mind. When introducing a new Dachshund to a household with young children, it is important to instruct the children how to respectfully interact with the dog, such as allowing the dog to approach the children rather than the children touching the dog aggressively or without permission. Monitoring any interactions between the two is key, and discontinuing any playtime or contact that proves to be too aggressive, overwhelming, or stressful to the Dachshund.
Dachshunds are incredibly bright and intuitive dogs, capable of learning many things and retaining information. They can be trained with patience and reinforcement, and their eagerness to learn is often met with success. As a hunting dog, they possess an excellent sense of smell and strong problem-solving skills, and are often relied upon to maneuver through difficult terrain. These miniature hounds of remarkable intelligence have also been known to remember activities like fetching objects or playing hide-and-seek.
