Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are undeniably one of the most entertaining dog breeds around. Not only do they have their unique sausage shape and short legs, but their lively and spirited personalities make them the perfect companion for anyone. They were originally bred as hunters, which explains why they have an incredible sense of smell as well as an intense prey drive. Dachshunds are generally tenacious and brave, but because of their small size, they can be quite sensitive. Interestingly, Dachshunds come in three varieties—smooth and wirehaired, as well as the longhaired variety.
Dachshunds are not typically hypoallergenic. While individual dachshunds may be less likely to trigger an allergic reaction than other breeds, it's impossible to conclusively classify any breed as totally hypoallergenic. As with any breed, it's impossible to predict how strongly any individual dog may trigger allergies. Allergies can generally be triggered by proteins found in saliva, urine, and dander, which can be found in most breeds.
Dachshunds should be fed a premium, high-quality dry kibble made specifically for small breed dogs. Depending on the size of your Dachshund, they should receive anywhere from about 1/2 to 1 cup of kibble per day as a part of a balanced diet. In order to give your Dachshund extra vitamins and minerals, many people choose to mix wet canned food in with the dry food.
Yes, Dachshunds have some special requirements. For one, they need a large amount of exercise and mental stimulation every day. They are highly energetic dogs who tend to get bored very easily, so they need lots of repeated playtime, walks, and varied physical activities. They are also prone to health issues like back problems, which can be exacerbated by jumping or any activity that puts excess strain on their backs, so activities like climbing stairs should be done with care. Additionally, they need regular brushing and care to maintain a healthy, shiny coat.
Dachshunds come in two size varieties: standard and miniature. Standard-size Dachshunds typically weigh anywhere from 16-32 pounds and can be up to 9 inches tall at the shoulder, while miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or less and are under 5 inches tall at the shoulder. Dachshunds also come in a wide range of coat types and colors.
Dachshunds have a surprising amount of enthusiasm for water activities! Generally speaking, the breed enjoys the water and swimming. Because of their stocky build, the Dachshund has a higher body fat which helps them stay buoyant and afloat. Often, the natural curiosity of these dogs leads them to instinctively paddle around in the water. However, their stubby legs may limit their ability to actually swim very far. With their low-ride bodies, Dachshunds struggle to stay above the surface.
Dachshunds can be an excellent fit for first-time owners, provided the owners have done some research into the characteristics of the breed. Dachshunds are loyal, affectionate, and typically brave, but also known for their independence and love of adventure. They have a tendency to be wary of strangers and can be difficult to housebreak. That being said, with firm, consistent training, they can make wonderful pets for committed first-time owners. It's important to be proactive about providing your Dachshund with plenty of exercise and socialization.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Dachshund will depend largely on their age and energy level. Generally, a young puppy should have at least two 10-15 minute training sessions per day, while an adult dog should have one session of 15-30 minutes per day. Reinforcing commands and rewarding desired behaviors should be a consistent part of your daily routine as well. Trainers often recommend doling out treats in controlled amounts throughout the day in addition to the regular training sessions in order to facilitate better behavior.
