Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are amazing and fun-loving dogs that have been around since the 1500s. They have literally come from an ancient form of hunting dog known as a “teckel”. Another fun fact about dachshunds is that they come in three different coat types: short-haired, wire-haired, and long-haired. They also have two size variations: standard (9-25 pounds) and miniature (under 11 pounds).
Dachshunds do, in fact, shed their coats to some degree. While they generally do not shed as much as some other dog breeds, they are not considered a low-shedding breed. It is important to realize that all dogs have some degree of shedding-and dachshunds are no exception. Though they may not be the best choice for people with allergies, they make great furry friends-and with regular brushing and regular grooming, their shedding can be managed in order to keep your home clean.
Dachshunds are particular eaters and require the right amount of quality food in order to stay healthy. It is best to give them a balanced, high-protein diet with meat as the primary ingredient. It should also contain healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals in addition to a good source of fiber. All these ingredients are necessary to a dachshund's development and well-being. Additionally, it's best to feed Dachshunds two meals a day in measured portions as they tend to overeat.
Before taking home your new Dachshund, you should purchase essentials like food and water bowls, a collar with an ID tag, a crate that is just the right size for your pup, a comfortable bed, chew toys, a grooming brush, a nail clipper, and waste bags. You may also want to purchase a leash so you can start teaching your dog how to go on walks, and if you have stairs, you may want to get your pup some stairs to make navigating them a bit easier.
Dachshunds can definitely appear larger than their tiny stature! Despite their size, they are considered small-size dogs. Dachshunds have long, slim bodies with short legs which gives them the appearance of being bigger than they are. As compared to the popular larger dog breeds like German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers, Dachshunds are a fraction of their size and weight. That said, they still bring plenty of love and loyal companionship to their owners.
Dachshunds are a relatively active breed of dog and require regular exercise to stay healthy and fit. Depending on the age and size of your Dachshund, the amount of exercise they need can vary. For adult dogs, a daily walk or jog is usually sufficient to meet their exercise needs and promote physical and mental health. Puppies, however, may require more physical activity, such as a long daily session of ball chasing and interactive play to expend their energy.
Dachshunds can make wonderful, gentle, and loyal companions for children and adults alike. They are typically social and friendly dogs, though some can have an independent nature. With early socialization and training, they can learn to be excellent companions for kids as they grow up. These dogs are highly intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement and rewards. Though they can be shy around strangers and need frequent socialization, they can get along well with children in the family. Dachshunds display an affinity for kids and an eagerness to protect them.
Training your Dachshund is a great way to ensure your pooch receives the best possible care and to strengthen your bond. Start with potty training and ensure your pup knows the basics like, sit, stay, come, etc. Next, you can move on to more advanced commands like walking on a leash and how to obey off-leash. You can teach this through positive reinforcement with treats, a key element in Dachshund training. Additionally, socializing your Dachshund, preferably from puppyhood, is important for your pup's behavior as an adult dog.
