A Dachshund is a small breed dog of the hound family and is also known as the “sausage dog”. With its long body, short legs, and pointy ears, the dachshund is an iconic and beloved breed for many dog owners. This breed is often considered to be a "big dog in a small package" thanks to its intelligence, playfulness, and courage. Dachshunds come in a variety of coat colors, patterns, and sizes including the miniature and regular choices.
The Dachshund coat is short and smooth to the touch. Depending on the type, the coat may range from short and shiny to longer and wiry. The breed typically comes in a variety of colors depending on the type as well, from solid colors like red or black to spotted or even double-coated. On average, the coat length is usually between one and two inches and they usually don't need a lot of maintenance beyond brushing or combing. The most important thing is to maintain the coat by keeping it free of mats and tangles.
Dachshunds should not be given rawhide or bones to chew as these can splinter and become a choking hazard for them. Additionally, because of their small stature they should not be given large pieces of hard food that can block their airway or lodge in their throat. Table foods such as onions, garlic, avocado, grapes, raisins, and chocolate are best avoided because they can be toxic to your puppy.
To be the best puppy parent for your Dachshund, it's important to provide a loving and supportive home with plenty of affection, attention, and exercise. Start by familiarizing yourself with the breed's care needs and make sure to do enough research to know what to expect as the pup grows up. Between two to three walks a day and regular playtime, be sure to provide plenty of physical activities and mental stimulation to keep your pup happy and engaged. Your pup's nutrition is also vital so be sure to provide a wholesome, appropriate diet specific to their breed and weight.
Generally, Dachshunds are categorized by weight. Standard Dachshunds are 16 to 32 pounds, while Miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or less. Dachshunds also come in a third size -Kaninchen, or "rabbit" Dachshunds, which can range from 8 to 11 pounds. Kaninchen Dachshunds are closer in size and proportions to their mini and standard counterparts, while Miniature Dachshunds are distinctly different from the other two sizes.
Dachshunds are often seen as energetic and playful. However, they can also be quite active depending on the individual dog. While some may choose to take part in more active activities like running and jumping around, others may be better suited for taking leisurely walks or playing fetch indoors.
