Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a very unique and special type of dog, belonging to the hound family. They are known for having long, slender bodies, short legs, and usually having two different varieties, either long-haired or short-haired. They come in a variety of colors, including black, cream, red, gray, and brown and they have loving personalities. Often, they are referred to as 'Doxies' and can be found in many households as loyal, playful companions. Although they may appear small, Dachshunds are quite strong and energetic.
Dachshunds have double coats which means they have two layers of fur; the top layer is coarse and the bottom layer is soft and downy. The coarse top layer not only provides insulation but it also repels water which helps to keep them warm and dry. The coat colors can range from black, chocolate and/or tan, often with any combination of these colors present.
Dachshunds have a hearty appetite and require a balanced diet to remain healthy and happy. Generally speaking, it's best for Dachshunds to be fed a high-quality, commercially-prepared dog food that was formulated with their size and nutritional needs in mind. Keep in mind that the primary ingredients of a food should be a meat product. Additional ingredients may include meal, grains, vegetables, and fruits. As a supplemental food, Dachshunds enjoy treats like small amounts of cheese, cooked eggs, and small-bite dog biscuits.
Before bringing home your new Dachshund, it is important to make sure that your home is ready. First, complete any home repairs that could cause injury or discomfort to your new pet, such as making sure that any loose wiring is tucked away. Also, puppy-proof your home by moving hazardous objects and moving breakables to higher places. Next, stock up on the necessary items, like a crate, toys, food, and bedding. Make sure to get a food and water bowl that is the correct size for your new pet.
The size of your Dachshund puppy depends on the breed, as there are several Dachshund varieties that range in size from miniature and thin to standard and stout. Generally, the grown size of a Dachshund can range anywhere from 8-9 inches in height for the smallest type (miniature) up to 24 inches in height for the largest type (standard). The approximate weight range also varies between the two types with the miniature type weighing around 8-11 pounds and the standard up to 32 pounds.
Dachshunds require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. An ideal amount of exercise for these active pups is a brisk walk for 20-30 minutes each day, in addition to a few short play sessions. Additionally, it's important to provide your Dachshund with the opportunity for mental stimulation and interactive play that will give them an outlet to use their naturally curious and smart personalities. Dachshunds need the extra activity and play to help maintain their fitness and prevent behavior problems from developing.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds can get along with other animals if they are properly socialized and introduced in a calm environment. While Dachshunds can make good, amiable companions to other pets, they still have a strong instinct to hunt small animals, and care should be taken when introducing them to other family pets. Proper training and introduction can go a long way in helping them to get along. Owners should make sure that their Dachshund is well-socialized prior to introducing them to new pets, as this can help ensure a successful transition.
Dachshunds are certainly intelligent dogs, exhibiting characteristics that make them an excellent companion animal. Some of their most admirable traits include their eagerness to please, inquisitive nature, problem solving skills, and loyalty. They learn quickly and can remember instructions with relative ease. Dachshunds are also surprisingly independent, possessing the ability to create solutions to problems on their own. This makes them capable problem solvers. In addition, dachshunds have excellent scent detection abilities making them ideal for assistance work and hunting.
