Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an endearing and beloved breed of small-sized dogs that have been around since the 16th century. A fun fact about these furry little cuties is that, although they are known for their short legs, they are actually quite speedy. Another fun fact is that their name actually comes from the German word “dachs” which means badger, as they were originally bred to hunt badgers and can fit into small spaces like their burrows. They were also initially used to catch rabbits and hares.
Dachshunds are not typically considered non-shedding dogs. While they will not shed to the extent of larger breeds, there will be hair around the home as they have a double coat and tend to have higher levels of dander. The best way to keep shedding to a minimum is to brush their coat regularly with a slicker brush to help remove excess hair and keep their coat healthy. Dachshunds also need to be groomed at least once or twice a year to help keep their hairstyle looking nice and neat.
Dachshunds are unique breeds that require tailored nutrition for optimal health. An ideal diet for your Dachshund should comprise of high-quality dry food that is specifically tailored to their age, activity level and health considerations. As long as it is balanced and nutritious, supplementing with fresh food is also encouraged. Fresh food is important because it allows you to provide additional vitamins and minerals that are not available in kibble. Opt for lean proteins like white fish, boiled chicken, or turkey, and nutritious veggies such as carrots, broccoli, and celery.
Dachshunds have some specific needs and requirements that should not be overlooked. Generally, they need to be provided with plenty of exercise, as they can become lazy and overweight without regular activity. They should also be groomed regularly and kept trimmed to prevent hair from impacting their vision or movement. Plus, they should visit a vet for regular check-ups and vaccinations. As a breed, they have a tendency to suffer from spinal disc issues, so they should be monitored for signs of pain whenever their activity levels change.
Dachshunds are considered a small breed of dog. Typically they range in size from 8 to 11 inches in height and from 11 to 32 pounds in weight. Generally, the miniature dachshunds will have a standard size of 8-11 inches at the shoulder and they will weigh less than 11 pounds. The standard dachshunds can be up to 16 inches and weigh up to 32 pounds. Regardless of the size, dachshunds generally have short legs and long bodies that can be either smooth or short-haired.
Many Dachshunds do enjoy swimming! It's important to introduce them to the experience safely and gradually, potentially beginning with shallow water and a life preserver to help them stay afloat if need be. After they become comfortable, you can then proceed to let them make their own decisions about how far they would like to venture into the water. However, keep in mind that each individual dog is different and some may have a greater affinity for water than others.
Dachshunds are generally excellent family dogs that bond with adults and children alike. Not only are they loyal and loving companions, but their small size makes them ideal for even small households. They thrive on interaction and are often sought after as making for especially great playmates – dachshunds are known for their energetic nature and can often keep up with children with their playful attitude. Not only does their devotion and love earn them a special place in their family’s hearts, but their intelligence means they’re also very capable of being trained with positive reinforcement.
Training a Dachshund is a rewarding task that can be accomplished through consistent practice sessions and lots of positive reinforcement. Begin by establishing a mutual understanding between you and your pup through obedience exercises such as “sit,” “stay,” and “come” using treats and lots of praise. Keep each practice session to a short and manageable length of time and set your expectations accordingly. Utilize potty training and crate training while introducing the pup to new tasks such as walking on a leash.
