It is believed that people bred several types of scent hounds together to create this unique type of hunting dog in Germany in the 1800s. Due to its shape, the Dachshund is sometimes referred to as "the wiener dog.
The Dachshund coat is famously recognizable for its short, smooth, and thick double-coat. This breed requires routine grooming to make sure the coat stays healthy and attractive. This breed is usually quite low maintenance; however, regular brushing and attention to the ears, eyes, nails, and teeth is recommended. The outer coat of the dachshund can range in color from black, red, buff, or even gray and silver.
