Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an interesting breed of dog. A German word, the name Dachshund translates to 'Badger Dog', stemming from their original purpose of being a courageous and hardworking burrowing dog. Perhaps the most interesting feature of Dachshunds is their unique range of coat sizes, from silky shorthaired coats to wiry longhaired coats. Even more unique and sometimes amusing is their signature body shape. They are recognized by their short legs, long backs, and adorable long floppy ears.
Dachshunds have a short coat that sheds minimally. While they are not considered to be non-shedding, they are among the breeds that don't leave a lot of fur on your furniture, clothing, or carpets. In some cases, it may seem like they are not shedding at all, but it's important to remember that all dogs are constantly shedding, though the amount varies from breed to breed. To reduce the amount of fur that accumulates, it's important to brush your dachshund's coat regularly.
Dachshunds require a nutritious, well-balanced diet to keep them healthy and active. When determining what to feed your Dachshund, look for a food with high quality protein, a variety of fruits and vegetables, and Omega-3 fatty acids. There are also breed-specific options available that can meet your Dachshund's specialized nutritional needs. Some owners opt to feed their Dachshund a combination of wet and dry food, while others prefer to feed a homemade diet.
Before welcoming your new Dachshund into your home, it's important to take some basic steps to prepare your living space. Make sure your floors are stable and without bumps or slippery surfaces. Consider using baby gates or stair gates to block access to areas or stairs that are not suitable for your pup. Adding soft bedding or pillows in a well-ventilated spot is an essential part of creating a safe and comfortable environment. Additionally, make sure any leads, collars, and bowls you plan to use are accessible and ready.
Dachshunds come in three sizes: standards, miniatures, and kaninchen (rabbits). Standard Dachshunds usually range from 16 to 32 pounds and measure 8 to 9 inches at the withers (the highest point of the shoulder blades). Miniature Dachshunds weight between 8 and 11 pounds and are 5 to 6 inches at the withers. Kaninchen Dachshunds are even smaller still, with most weighing less than 4 pounds and measuring no more than 4 to 5 inches at the withers.
Running with a Dachshund can be a great way to get exercise, however, there are several important things to consider before taking your dog on a run. Since Dachshunds are built differently from other breeds, they have a unique set of needs that must be met when it comes to physical exercise. To ensure your Dachshund stays healthy, it's best to start off with short stretches of running, gradually increasing the length of time and distance of each run. Additionally, you'll want to note the temperature and the terrain when running with your Dachshund.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds tend to get along well with other pets, provided they are properly introduced and socialized. Generally these dogs are affectionate and friendly when it comes to other animals, though they may be fiercely loyal to their owners and somewhat protective of their territory. Socializing a Dachshund from a young age and training them to get along with other animals can be beneficial, but also making sure that the animals in the household all get plenty of stimulation and exercise can help them to form strong, healthy relationships.
Dachshunds are certainly intelligent and possess a version of the herding instinct that can be seen in other breeds like collies. Though they were originally bred to hunt small game, they are quite adept at problem solving and learning commands and signals quickly. A forever curious little breed they also readily explore their environment. They are quick to sense changes in the mood of their owners and they will often take on the role of comforter by offering a reassuring cuddle when feeling blue.
