Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are quite a unique breed of dog with a distinct body shape and behavioral traits. They were bred to hunt badgers and other underground prey, giving them their short legs and long bodies. This feature, combined with their intelligence and loyalty, makes them a great pet for those who crave adventure. Additionally, their long ears and low-riding stature often give them a mischievous, comical air, making them both fun to be around and easy to win over.
Dachshunds have a very distinctive coat, with a topcoat that is usually short, smooth, and sleek and an undercoat that is soft and thick. Their coats can come in a variety of colors, such as red, tan, black, grey, and cream. The most popular coat type for Dachshunds is the short-haired variety, which is easy to take care of and rarely requires grooming. This type of coat may also be called a "smooth" coat.
Dachshunds should not be given chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, caffeine, macadamia nuts, or anything that contains xylitol, as these can all be toxic. They are also small dogs, and can be quickly overwhelmed by large treats or rawhide. Additionally, fatty table scraps, such as bacon or sausage, should be avoided. Dachshunds are susceptible to liver or pancreas issues, so they will need to be on a healthy diet which does not include table scraps or leftovers.
Before getting a Dachshund, you'll want to make sure you have all the essentials. This would include food and water dishes, food specially formulated for small breeds, a collar and leash, a comfortable bed, a brush and comb for grooming, chew toys, a crate to use for potty training, and a doggy muzzle (in case your pup is too playful when meeting new people and animals). Last but not least, you should get a vet checkup for your new puppy and get a start on the necessary vaccinations and deworming.
Dachshunds can vary in size, but generally speaking, they're considered small-to-medium dogs. Though they tend to be longer than they are tall, at full size, they rarely reach over 9-14 pounds, so most would consider them to be on the smaller side. Even so, their energetic personalities, boldness, and loyalty make them appear ‘bigger’ than they actually are, and that’s part of why they’re so popular.
How often to walk a Dachshund is largely dependent on the individual dog and their activity levels; however, as a general rule of thumb, it is recommended that they get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This can be broken up into two 15-minute walks, or one longer walk. If your Dachshund is particularly active, they may benefit from additional walks or playtime. Providing proper exercise is essential for their physical, mental, and emotional well being; it also promotes healthy bone and joint development.
Dachshunds are generally good with kids if they are properly socialized. They are usually active and playful, so they can make great companion pets for children. Since Dachshunds are a smaller-sized breed, they may need extra care to ensure their safety around larger children. It is important to supervise any interaction between children and a Dachshund to make sure each is getting the best out of the experience. When cared for properly, Dachshunds can develop strong bonds with children and make loving, loyal companions.
The amount of time you should spend training your dachshund each day will depend on a few factors such as the age, temperament and attention span of the dog. Generally, training sessions should last no more than 10-15 minutes each. However, depending on the specific needs of your pet, you may need to extend the individual sessions or add multiple sessions throughout the day to ensure that your dachshund has learned the concept properly. It is important to also make sure to structure your training sessions, so your pet knows what to expect when it comes time to practice.
