Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are known for their unwavering loyalty, mischievous nature, and their desire to cuddle. Some additional fun facts about Dachshunds are that they were originally bred to hunt badgers, rabbits, and other burrowing animals. Dachshunds also have three coat types; Smooth, Wirehaired, and Long-haired.
The Dachshund coat is soft, short, and sleek. It may vary in color with solid black, brown, silver, wheaten, or gray, as well as mixtures of those colors. Additionally, the coat may also be brindle, double-dapple, and dapple, and may come with a wire-haired or smooth-haired variety. Generally, the Dachshund's coat requires little maintenance other than some occasional brushing, and a bath when necessary.
Dachshunds should not be fed any type of food containing artificial flavorings, colors, or preservatives as these ingredients can be potentially harmful. Additionally, they should avoid chewing on any inedible objects such as sticks, rocks, and toys since this could lead to an intestinal blockage. In regards to what they can eat, exceptions include high-quality dry and wet dog food formulated for their size and breed, and treats specifically formulated for dogs.
Before getting a Dachshund, it is important to make sure you have all the essentials. These will include a doggy bed, soft toys, a collar, identification tags, a leash, food and water bowls, and a quality dry dog food. You’ll also need to stock up on treats, soaps, shampoos and other grooming items. To keep your pup safe and help them learn good behaviors, a crate should also be purchased.
Dachshunds are smallto medium-sized dogs, so they usually don't fit into the category of "big" dogs. While there are larger breeds of Dachshunds than others, none is considered to be particularly large. They are most often seen as Miniature, Standard, and Kaninchen (Rabbit) sizes, none of which reaches the same sizes as many of the other "big" breeds. As a result, Dachshunds typically are not considered to be large dogs.
Dachshunds are active dogs and need a good amount of exercise every day to stay healthy. A good rule of thumb is approximately 45 minutes of activity, which can be achieved through walks, hikes, and trips to the dog park. Depending on the age and health of your specific dog, more or less activity may be required. Pay attention to your Dachshund's behavior; if they seem tired or restless, adjust the activity. Playing fetch or hide-and-seek inside the house are also good ways to give your dog the exercise they need.
Dachshunds are generally an excellent choice if they have been well socialized and raised around children. For the most part, these dogs tend to get along well with children and like to play with them. However, parents should make sure to supervise the interaction between kids and the Dachshund to ensure the safety of both the dog and any children. It's also important to ensure that the children understand how to approach and interact with a dog properly in order for everyone to have a positive experience.
It is difficult to say exactly how much time needs to be dedicated per day to properly train a Dachshund. Generally speaking, in order to achieve the best results, a minimum of 20 minutes per day should be dedicated to working with and training a Dachshund. This could be more, depending on the individual pup and training needs, but 20 minutes daily could include basic commands, socialization, and trick training. To get the best results, start with a few minutes several times a day and gradually ramp up the length and intensity.
