Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an affectionate and lively breed of dog that originated in Germany somewhere between the 17th and 19th centuries. Not only are they known for their friendly personality and spunky attitude, but they also hold a few interesting physical characteristics that make them unique. Not only do the come in an array of sizes and colors, but their long bodies and short legs mean they hunt animals in narrow foxholes. Interestingly enough, Dachshunds were always bred in two sizes: standard and miniature. The miniature Dachshund was developed to hunt the badger.
Dachshunds are classified as low-shedding dogs, meaning that they typically don't shed as much as other breeds. This makes them less likely to be an allergy or asthma trigger to owners. That said, since Dachshunds have long hairs, they do need regular brushing and grooming to help keep their coats healthy and prevent shedding. Additionally, Dachshunds do still generate some shedding of their coats, but it is generally considerably less than other breeds.
Dachshunds should not be fed chocolate and other sugary snacks as well as foods high in fat. Many owners mistakenly think that all table scraps are suitable for their pet, but this can be dangerous. Avoid feeding them bones, as these can cause serious damage to their intestinal tract, or easily become stuck and require emergency surgery. Additionally, foods that are too spicy or heavily seasoned can cause digestive upset. The key to a healthy Dachshund diet is to provide a balanced nutritional blend with proper proportions of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals.
Before bringing a Dachshund into your home, you should make sure to stock up on some essential items such as food, treats, chew toys, a collar, an ID tag, a leash, a crate, nail clippers, puppy pads, a bed, and a brush. It is also important to be prepared for any potential health issues that may arise, so consider purchasing pet insurance and/or a pet first aid kit.
Dachshunds are a small breed of dog, often referred to as a "wiener dog" or a "sausage dog" due to their unique body shape. They range in size from miniature, which is 8-11 inches tall and weighs up to 11 pounds, to standard, which is 16-32 inches tall and weighs anywhere from 16 to 32 pounds.
It's important to give your Dachshund at least 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. This should include daily walks, to stretch his legs and give him the opportunity to sniff around and explore. For most Dachshunds, three 10 to 15 minutes walks are ideal, as long as the terrain isn't too strenuous. Even if you don't have a securely fenced yard, you can still find ways to keep your pup active and healthy. Take your pup to dog parks or explore nature trails and find new places for your pup to explore.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds are loyal, affectionate, and sociable animals. They can get along very well with kids, as long as the children know how to treat them with respect and kindness. Dachshunds will often become a loyal companion to the entire family, including any children that may be in the household. If given enough time to warm up to the situation and given a friendly introduction, Dachshunds can become fond of and trusting of the kids in the family.
First and foremost, Dachshunds need plenty of exercise and attention. Consistent opportunities for exercise and playtime will help your Dachshund remain healthy, happy, and properly trained. Also, make sure your Dachshund is receiving basic obedience training from an early age. Utilizing positive reinforcement techniques such as offering treats for desired behaviors will help ensure they remember the commands. Make sure you are patient and consistent with your training as your Dachshund will likely have a penchant for stubbornness.
