Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a class of small dogs that belong to the hound family. More specifically, they are defined as a part of the small European hounds and were historically bred to hunt small game such as rabbits, hares, and badgers. Although their unique and recognizable shape has remained constant over the years, Dachshunds come in three varieties: smooth, wire-haired, and long-haired. They generally weigh between 10 and 15 pounds and stand seven to nine inches tall. They have a loyal and effortlessly friendly disposition making them great companions.
The Dachshund's coat is predominantly short and straight, although some longer-haired varieties exist. The breed tends to have a coarse, but glossy and resilient coat that repels dirt. The head and ears are usually covered in short, smooth fur, while the body, legs, and tail have longer hair that sheds seasonally. The breed is known for its many colors and patterns, including black and tan, chocolate and tan, dapple, cream, grey, and red, all of which feature a glossy, smooth top coat.
Dachshunds need a diet high in nutrients and proteins to help them stay healthy. As members of the Hound family, they can enjoy a variety of meats, as well as healthful whole grains and vegetables. When creating a meal plan for a Dachshund, owners should try to mix up the flavors and textures to keep them interested. Protein sources like chicken, turkey, beef, and fish are excellent for this breed. Whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal, and quinoa are good options for additional fiber and grain-based carbohydrates.
Before getting a Dachshund, you'll want to make sure you have the essential items to keep your pup safe and happy. Start with a cozy bed that your pup can call their own, with toys for entertainment. Invest in a collar and leash for your pup, as well as ID tags. Get a sturdy crate to use for potty-training, as well as appropriate food and treats. Lastly, a brush for grooming sessions and nail clippers can be helpful for maintenance. Stocking up on these items will help you and your pup get off to the best start!
Dachshunds come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and kaninchen (German for ‘rabbit’). The standard size weighs an average of 16-32 lbs. and is 16-32 inches long. The miniature size weighs an average of 11 lbs. or less and is 14 inches or less in length. The kaninchen size weighs an average of 8-11 lbs. and is 8-11 inches long. Taller than the other two sizes, the standard size has a longer body and shorter legs.
Certainly, with some consideration. Dachshunds are energetic and make excellent running companions, but their size and lack of agility might make them more prone to injury and exhaustion than other breeds, so it's advisable to start off slowly and keep the running times and distances at a comfortable level for your pup. Additionally, make sure to plan ahead and take proper safety precautions to avoid any potential issues such as too much sun, too much physical exertion or crossing potentially dangerous terrain.
Dachshunds can be great family dogs due to their friendly and curious personalities. They are energetic, loyal, and highly affectionate – making them great canine companions. Dachshunds enjoy spending time with their people and crave human contact, so playing and cuddling are key components in keeping these dogs happy. While small in stature, they are courageous dogs that make excellent watchdogs. Their small size makes them an ideal companion for older people or a family with young children, as they will remain content in an apartment or house.
Dachshunds are famed for their intelligence and are considered to be one of the smartest dog breeds out there. High levels of intelligence have enabled the Dachshund breed to develop problem-solving skills, exhibit keen awareness of their environment, and stay focused on tasks. Studies have found that Dachshunds also respond best to reward-based training, which further illustrates their intelligence. Dachshunds are affectionately known for their loyalty, understanding, resourcefulness, and obedience which can help an owner feel confident in the pet's ability to comprehend and comply with commands.
