Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a charismatic breed of dog that have been around since the 1600s. They are a part of the "hound" family, and are known for their long and silky-smooth coat. Though they are considered small dogs, they have a big personality! Dachshunds need a lot of daily exercise and stimulation to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. As a unique breed, they can be quite assertive and stubborn at times! Training is important for a Dachshund's success, as they respond well to positive reinforcement.
Dachshunds have unique coats that are both short and thick. Generally, they have a smooth and shiny coat that is a blend of many colors such as black and tan, red, chocolate, and cream. Additionally, some Dachshunds have long and wavy coats that appear silky, while others may have a waterproof and a virtually wire-haired coat with a coarse outercoat and denser undercoat. Their coats are hypoallergenic and easy to maintain. Brushing is a must, and regular baths are necessary to keep their coats healthy.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything fatty, high in carbohydrates, or anything with a lot of sugar. Foods like chocolate, candy, garlic, onions, grapes, and raisins should all be avoided, as they can be toxic to dogs. In addition, human food such as cheese and ice cream should be avoided as they can be high in fat and sugar. It's also important to make sure their diet is balanced and that any dog treats are low in fat, as this breed can be prone to gaining weight.
First things first, you should set aside a designated area in your home for your Dachshund. This designated area should be free of sharp objects and any danger as a Dachshund can be quite mischievous throughout the home and can injure itself. Prepare the designated area with comfortable bedding, warm blankets, food, treats and plenty of toys. You should also start puppy-proofing your home to prevent any damage or injury by checking for any hidden power cords, toxic plants, holes or cracks around furniture, and any sharp objects.
Dachshunds are classic small breeds that usually weigh under 25 pounds, so they are not typically thought of as 'big dogs'. However, their size varies depending on their type. A standard Dachshund on the larger side can be upwards of 32 pounds, while a miniature Dachshund can fit in the lap of an adult and weigh no more than 11 pounds. Still, compared to other small dogs, a Dachshund's size can feel larger because of their longer body and muscular legs.
It depends on the individual Dachshund. Some dogs are more suited for running than others. It is important to assess your Dachshund's overall health, physical attributes, and energy level before you start incorporating running into their exercise routine. You should also talk to your vet about the potential risks associated with running, such as heat exhaustion and other injury-related risks. Even if the Dachshund is physically fit enough to run, you should only do so on even, flat surfaces where there are no predominant inclines or declines to avoid placing too much strain on their back.
Dachshunds can make excellent family companions, and they can often get along very well with children. These intelligent and resilient dogs can be great playmates, providing your children with attentive and loyal companionship. However, as with any canine, it is important to provide clear and consistent boundaries, and make sure your kids understand that their Dachshund is not a toy. Because this breed is prone to spinal issues, it's important not to let your child play too rough with them.
Dachshunds are indeed very clever little dogs, often displaying intelligence in a variety of ways. They are natural problem solvers and are incredibly adept at performing tasks such as mazes and puzzles. They are also known for being able to remember a pattern of command and cues given by their owners. With appropriate socialization and training, Dachshunds can learn how to obey simple commands and be incredibly loyal.
