Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a very lovable and affectionate breed of dog with a loyal and caring nature. They are also incredibly intelligent and active making them great family pets! Some fun facts about dachshunds include the fact that they were originally bred to hunt badgers and small animals such as rabbits and were known in Germany as “Dachs-hund”, meaning “badger dog”. Dachshunds come in two sizes, “standard” and “miniature,” and they come in three different coats:
Dachshunds do shed, as they are a breed of dog that was bred to have a long coat. While they are not a non-shedding breed, they do not generally have an excessive amount of shedding. They tend to require regular grooming, as their hair can become matted or tangled if not cared for properly. It's important to brush their hair regularly to help reduce the amount of shedding they do. Regular baths are also important to help keep their coat clean and healthy, which helps minimize shedding as well.
Dachshunds should not be fed chocolate, which contains a toxin that is harmful for dogs; raisins, which can lead to kidney failure; grapes, which can lead to serious health issues; onions, which can lead to anemia; garlic, which can cause damage to red blood cells; alcohol, which can lead to respiratory depression; uncooked dough, which will expand in the stomach; sugary food and drinks, which can lead to obesity or diabetes; or any type of processed or human food.
Preparing for your new Dachshund can seem daunting, but with a little planning and organization, you can make sure you have everything you need. Start by researching the breed find out about typical behavior, dietary needs and start planning ahead. Plan how much space you need and a budget for purchasing supplies like food, toys and any accessories you'll need. Make sure to set up a vet appointment to get your new pup checked out and get up to date with any necessary vaccines.
While Dachshunds can grow to be anywhere from 5 to 32 pounds, most experts would not classify this breed as a 'big dog'. They are known for being a medium-sized canine in accordance with the standards set by the American Kennel Club. Despite their diminutive size, Dachshunds have a spunky personality that belies their smaller stature. Furthermore, they are willing and capable of participating in activities tailored to larger breeds.
Dachshunds typically enjoy being in the water, although it depends on the individual pup. Some will take a dip in the pool or splash in a puddle, while others may be content to simply watch the water from afar. Generally, the larger or chubbier the Dachshund, the less likely they are to do any real swimming. However, as long as your pup isn't at risk of sinking, it is often fun to give them a chance to dog paddle.
Dachshunds can make excellent family dogs when brought up in the right environment. They're loyal, affectionate, and enjoy being part of a lively home. their small size means they're great for households with limited space or a small garden, and are also relatively low maintenance when it comes to exercise and grooming. With regular training, they can also learn basic commands and commands, respond positively to rewards-based methods, and get on well with children when appropriately supervised. They make for lively and entertaining companions, and can bring a lot of love and joy to a family home.
Dachshunds may not be renowned for their intelligence, but that is most likely because of their stubborn streak. Dachshunds are quite smart when it comes to learning tricks and understanding commands, and they are often successful at quickly learning valuable skills such as housetraining and responding to basic commands. Additionally, Dachshunds are often praised for their resourcefulness and cunning, making them clever problem solvers. Dachshunds are also highly devoted to their owners and can form strong bonds, demonstrating their loyalty and intelligence.
