Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an incredibly unique and fascinating breed of dog. Perhaps the most interesting thing about them is their shape! Their short legs and elongated bodies have earned them the nickname “hot dog” or “wiener dog” and they are sure to bring a smile to your face when you see them! They have great adaptability and were originally bred as a badger hunter in Germany due to their boldness, courage and tenacity. They are intelligent, active, and mischievous, making them incredibly entertaining pets.
Dachshunds have a distinctive coat that can come in a variety of colors including black, tan, red, cream, and more. Their coat is generally short and thick with variations of length and texture on the body. The back is usually smooth and the belly can be more wiry in texture. Dachshunds also have long, curved, and pointed ears that are covered with long hair. Most Dachshunds will have a profuse coat, although the smooth-haired variety is usually shorter.
Your Dachshund should be fed a nutritionally balanced diet, ideally one that is specifically designed for smaller breeds. When selecting a food for your Dachshund, look for one that is labeled as an adult maintenance, premium or performance diet. These diets contain the balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats and other nutrients including Omega fatty acids and glucosamine which are precise to the needs of Dachshunds. You may also choose a diet with smaller kibble size, as Dachshunds have small mouths.
Preparing for a new Dachshund is an exciting venture and you want to make sure you are well-prepared for the adventure! It is important to create a cozy environment in your home by getting all the necessary items food and water dishes, bed, toys, etc. Additionally, research and familiarize yourself with the possible health problems associated with the Dachshund breed so that you can be prepared to address health issues if need be. Lastly, be sure to make arrangements for regular vet check-ups so that your new pet can stay healthy and happy!
Dachshunds vary in size, but the breed averages around 8-9 inches in height and 15-30 pounds in weight. Miniature Dachshunds typically weigh 11 pounds or less, while standard Dachshunds typically weigh 16 to 32 pounds. Therefore, adult Dachshunds are generally considered smallto medium-sized dogs. Dachshunds are on the small side of the breed spectrum, but they still require adequate space for playtime.
The ideal amount of walking for any Dachshund each day depends largely on the individual dog. Generally speaking, a healthy adult Dachshund should be given a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise daily. This can come in a variety of forms, such as light walking, playing fetch, or another game. If the Dachshund is older or has any health concerns, it may be best to consult a vet for their specific exercise needs. Some dogs require more exercise than others, so time spent outdoors should be tailored based on your pet's individual wellbeing.
While Dachshunds are intelligent and loyal, it is difficult to predict how they will interact with other animals. Dachshunds have a tendency to be quite territorial, but with proper introduction and the right environment they can be good friends with other pets. As with all breeds, it is important to monitor their interactions with other animals to ensure that none of the animals are getting hurt or overwhelmed. Proper socialization is key when introducing a Dachshund to other animals and providing plenty of training is essential.
Dachshunds are highly intelligent, adaptable dogs, so training can go quite smoothly if started early. Every effort should be made to try and provide them with consistent instruction, positive reinforcement, and lots of consistency. Training a Dachshund can take a bit more patience than other breeds, considering their spunky personalities, but the process can be quite enjoyable and ultimately fruitful. Generally, the earlier a Dachshund is socialized both around other pets and people the easier it is to train them.
