Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are the cutest, happiest breed of dog! Often referred to as "wiener" or "sausage" dogs, they have short legs and a long body, making them extremely easy to recognize. They are incredibly loyal and make excellent family pets, as they love staying close to their owners. It is important to remember that these dogs, while they have great energy and desire to please their owners, also need to be shown lots of love and patience in order to be truly happy.
Dachshunds have a double coat consisting of a short, sparse inner coat that is usually gray, and a medium-length, thick outer coat which can be either wiry or smooth. The most common color for this breed of dog is a reddish brown called wild boar, but they also come in a variety of colors such as fawn, black and tan, or cream/wheaten. Their uniform, sleek body is covered in small, oval, short-haired scales. The legs have feathered fur and the entire body is nicely rounded.
Dachshunds, like any other breed of dog, should not be fed chocolate, alcohol, caffeine or human food, such as onions, garlic, grapes and raisins. Additionally, Dachshunds should stay away from foods that are high in fat, including bacon, pork, and fatty meats, as they can cause pancreatitis. Dachshunds should never have bones steak bones, as they can splinter and cause an obstruction or injury.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Dachshund begins with making sure you provide a loving and safe home environment. As a start, you should create a predictable daily routine with ample time for exploration and play together. Additionally, ensure your pup is on a healthy diet and receives regular exercise, including plenty of opportunities to socialize with other dogs and humans. You should also provide plenty of positive reinforcement, supplementing praise and treats with toys and chews to ensure they are intellectually stimulated.
Dachshunds come in three different sizes: Standard Dachshunds, which normally weigh between 16 and 32 pounds; Miniature Dachshunds, which weigh between 8 and 11 pounds; and Kaninchen Dachshunds, which are the smallest size and typically weigh less than 8 pounds. Additionally, the Standard variety can be bred down to a miniature size, known as a “tween” size, which is between a miniature and standard size. Therefore, those looking for an especially small pet might choose the tween size.
The amount of exercise your Dachshund needs depends on a variety of factors including age, breed and overall health. Generally speaking, it's recommended that a Dachshund get at least 15 minutes to 1 hour of physical activity each day. With a Dachshund, however, short walks just aren't enough. In order to prevent your pup from becoming overweight or bored, make sure to offer a variety of activities such as fetch or running alongside you in a park.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds are quite friendly towards other pets and enjoy their company. They can get along quite well with cats and other dogs, although it's best to introduce them to the pet slowly and under supervision. Even if your pup is comfortable around other pets, it's important to practice proper safety protocols, such as ensuring that all animals have been neutered, and providing plenty of space for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves.
Dachshunds, while not typically recognized as one of the most intelligent breeds, undoubtedly possess a depth of intelligence and problem-solving abilities that can make them ideal companions. They remember commands and routines quickly, and they are even known to be able to use the toilet when trained to do so. Their problem-solving intelligence also manifests in their stubborn and independent attitude, which can present challenges for new pet owners to adjust to. Fortunately, with patience and dedication a loving bond and understanding between Dachshunds and their owners is certainly achievable.
