Questions & Answers
Dachshunds make great family pets because they are intelligent, loyal, and affectionate. They are curious and playful, but they can also be independent at times. Due to their long, low build, Dachshunds tend to injure their backs easily, so they need to be protected from jumping off furniture and stairs, and should not be allowed to get too overweight. They usually shed twice a year and their coats need regular grooming to stay healthy and prevent tangles. They need a daily walk along with regular mental and physical stimulation to ensure their behavior stays enjoyable.
Dachshunds sport a unique double coat which helps them endure cooler climates. The outer coat is short and smooth and the inner coat is soft and downy which helps insulate against the cold. The coat's color and pattern can range from black and tan, to chocolate, to brindle, and can even be single-hued. The coat itself is glossy and nice to the touch. Some coats are much longer and shaggier than others, depending on the breed type.
Dachshunds are a unique breed with elevated dietary needs. As smaller dogs, they require more daily calories than their larger counterparts, yet because they are prone to obesity, it's important to provide them with plenty of high-quality, balanced nutrition. Though they do quite well on a high-protein diet, Dachshunds should avoid too much fat, carbohydrates and fiber, as digestion issues can arise. They benefit from frequent meals, ideally two or three a day, that caters to the right proportions of vitamins, minerals, oils and other nutrients.
Dachshunds do have some special requirements when it comes to their care and well-being. They are a type of small to medium-sized dog that requires daily exercise and regular grooming to maintain their skin and coat. These dogs may be prone to back injuries and should be monitored while climbing or jumping up or down from furniture and other objects. Their diet should also be closely monitored and managed to ensure their health and weight are maintained.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: Standard and Miniature. A Standard Dachshund, also referred to as a show dog, is usually between 16 and 32 pounds and 8 and 9 inches in height at the shoulders when fully grown. On the other hand, Miniature Dachshunds are normally between 8 and 11 pounds and 5 and 6 inches in height. Keep in mind, however, that the American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize a size difference between Standard and Miniature Dachshunds; they are considered the same breed.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds are able to swim and many of them enjoy it. This breed is known to have a history of going after burrowing animals that live in rivers and lakes, which indicates that they are familiar with water. Depending on the environment and individual dog, the enthusiasm and skill that a Dachshund has for swimming can vary. Some take to it naturally while others may need some guidance and adjustment to learn how to swim. At least one good lesson in a pool or shoreline should be enough to get them used to the water.
Dachshunds are usually good with children, as long as they are properly socialized from a young age. They are intelligent, loyal, and affectionate companions that will form strong bonds with their family, including children. It is important to remember that Dachshunds are an excitable breed and they may become a bit jumpy if not accustomed to how children play. When it comes to children, it is important to keep playtime supervised and to guide them in how to interact calmly and gently with the dog.
Dachshunds are intelligent and highly trainable dogs. They are part of the hound group, which are generally known for their scent-tracking abilities as well as being able to think logically and use deduction to find solutions to problems. Dachshunds are great problem-solvers and keen observers, which makes them incredibly clever when it comes to learning commands and tricks. They have a strong willingness to please their owners, and are usually not above using their charm and wit to get their way.
