They were first bred in the 1800s in Germany, with their original purpose being as a hunting dog, hunting badgers, foxes, and other animals that lived in their underground burrows. Today Dachshunds make excellent house pets, due to their long-haired coats, medium size, and sweet disposition. They are also alert guard dogs, making them a great addition to any home.
