Dachshunds are part of the Hound Group of dogs. This breed is easily recognizable by their long body and short legs and is often referred to as a "sausage dog". They were first bred in the 1800s in Germany, with their original purpose being as a hunting dog, hunting badgers, foxes, and other animals that lived in their underground burrows. Today Dachshunds make excellent house pets, due to their long-haired coats, medium size, and sweet disposition. They are also alert guard dogs, making them a great addition to any home.
The coat of a Dachshund comes in a variety of colors and textures. Generally, the shorthaired variety of the breed has a sleek, shiny, smooth coat.
