Dachshunds are usually friendly and active dogs; however, they can be mischievous and adventurous too. Dachshunds are known for their long, slender bodies and short legs. This breed does have a tendency to bark a lot, so if you prefer peace and quiet, this is probably not the right breed for you. They do well with leash-training and socializing with other animals, including cats and have a lifespan of 12 to 16 years.
It is possible that Dachshunds could cause you to have allergies, but this depends on a number of factors. First, allergic reactions to a Dachshund’s fur or saliva can be caused due to an individual’s sensitivity to the breed’s particular dander or spittle. Second, allergic reactions may occur in people who have allergies to other animals in the same family, such as dogs. Lastly, environmental allergens (i.e. dust, pollen, etc.
Dachshunds should not be fed any human food that contains onions, garlic, or grapes as these ingredients can be toxic to them. It is also very important to carefully monitor the amount of food they consume and utilize only food formulas specifically made for dogs so that all of their nutritional needs are met. Avoid feeding table scraps, as they tend to contain high levels of fat and sodium which are harmful to your Dachshund's health. Stick to dog-formulated kibble, treats, and low-fat canned food, making sure to look out for sugar and carbohydrate content.
To become the best puppy parent for a Dachshund, you should do your research and learn about the breed so you can find the best puppy care environment and puppy supplies for your pup. Show your Dachshund love and affection; be sure to give them plenty of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Developing a consistent routine for your pup is important for forming trusting behaviors and positive reinforcement. To make sure your puppy is socializing and playing appropriately, enroll your pup in classes for basic puppy obedience so you can learn how to appropriately handle different situations.
While generally classified as a small dog breed, Dachshunds can vary in size, particularly between the standard and miniature varieties. Depending on how you define "big", Dachshunds might be considered a medium-sized or even large breed if the standard size is taken into account. On average, standard Dachshunds can grow up to 9-12 inches tall at the shoulder, and typically weigh up to 16-32 pounds. This could certainly be seen as a "big" size for a dog.
Given the size and breed of a Dachshund, an individual should aim to walk their dog for between 20 and 30 minutes every day. This is adequate to keep them physically fit and active, and can be broken down into three activities of varying intensity for the best results. Walking your Dachshund at a brisk pace is a great way to exercise their muscles and strengthen their bones, as well as maintain healthy activity levels, while playing games such as fetch will provide some occasional intervals of higher intensity that are beneficial for them.
Dachshunds can make excellent companions for kids and are known for their loving nature. They can be incredibly loyal, with the potential to form strong bonds with their family members. While some Dachshunds may initially appear timid or shyer than other breeds, with the right socialization and development, they can come to be some of the most joyful and doting pets.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds are quite smart dogs. They are known to be curious and inquisitive, which makes them excellent problem solvers. They're also known to be witty and have an impressive sense of humor. Studies have shown that Dachshunds are capable of understanding and obeying commands with training, though they may appear stubborn sometimes. They also have a tendency to remember tasks that they have been trained to do, making them rather capable dogs.
