Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a breed of small, long-bodied hound with short legs. They originated in Germany, and are also referred to as “Dackel”, “Teckel” or “Wiener Dog”. They are generally friendly, loyal, and affectionate companions who bring much joy and laughter to their families. Dachshunds come in two sizes, “standard” and “miniature” and three different coat types, smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired.
While Dachshunds are not considered to be a "hypoallergenic breed" of dog, some people may not experience allergic reactions when around them. This is because different breeds of dogs produce varying amounts of allergens, leading to varying degrees of allergens present in each. For this reason, individuals that suffer from allergies should research in-depth the breed they are considering, and converse with a veterinarian regarding any potential health risks associated with the breed in question.
It is important to feed your Dachshund a balanced diet that is rich in nutrients and tailored to its age and activity levels. Adult Dachshunds need more protein than puppies as they are prone to obesity. You should provide your Dachshund with as much exercise as you can to maintain a healthy weight. High-quality food for Dachshunds should contain slow-cooked meats that have been freeze-dried or gently dried at low temperatures. The food should also be free of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.
Preparation for your new Dachshund starts with a safe, comfortable home environment. Make sure any areas of potential danger, such as stairs or areas with sharp furniture corners/edges, are blocked off to allow the pup to explore without harm. Consider investing in pet-proof window blinds or other forms of shutters to help keep your pup from getting injured. Additionally, set aside an area like a rarely used room as a designated place for potty training and confinement while you are away from home.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: Standard and Miniature. Standard Dachshunds are usually between 16 and 32 pounds and stand about 8-9 inches tall. Miniature Dachshunds weigh between 11 and 16 pounds and stand 5 to 6 inches tall at the shoulder. In most cases, Standards are lanky and Miniatures are more stout, but this isn't a determining factor for deciding between the two sizes. A good place to start when deciding which size to get would be to look at the size and lifestyle of your family.
It is recommended that adult Dachshunds receive at least 30 to 45 minutes of exercise each day. This can be focused on activities like walking, playing, or any other activities that give your pet physical activity and mental stimulation. It is best to break up their exercise into two to three shorter sessions throughout the day to help keep them at their happiest and healthiest. You can adjust the number of minutes spent exercising per day based on your pet's age, their overall health, and their energy levels.
Dachshunds are popular family dogs, and they are generally very good with children. They are affectionate, loyal, and have a friendly disposition, so they make fantastic companions for children. Generally, because they are small, they are not recommended for smaller children, as they could get easily injured. However, Dachshunds that have been socialized with children since they were puppies are typically calm and gentle around them. They may even become very protective of their young owners.
Training your Dachshund is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. While it may seem difficult at first, Dachshunds are smart and can learn quickly with the right approach. To successfully train your pup, start with basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Use treats or excited vocal praise when your Dachshund responds correctly. You can also teach more advanced behaviors by gradually increasing the complexity of the task and providing positive reinforcement.
