Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a breed of hound dogs that originate from Germany. They have an elongated body and short legs that gives them an adorable look and also make them well-suited for hunting by digging into dens. They come in three coat varieties which are smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired. Dachshunds are usually very playful, curious, and independent. Their intelligence can make them easy to train, but their stubborness and mischievousness can often create difficulties. They require regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent behavioral issues like barking.
Dachshunds are considered to have low to moderate shedding, making them ideal for people who generally aren't fond of dog shedding, but want to keep a canine companion. Although, the extent of shedding and the amount of grooming needed may vary from one Dachshund to another, depending on their coat type. Dogs with smooth coats tend to shed less, while longer coat varieties may require a bit more grooming to manage shedding. Regular brushing can help to control shedding somewhat and keep the coat looking healthy.
Dachshunds should not be fed grapes, raisins, chocolate or any food containing theobromine, as they can cause serious health problems. Due to their small size and long backs, Dachshunds should not eat bones, as bones can splinter and lead to major health issues or worse. Additionally, Dachshunds should not be given onions as they are toxic to canines in any form. Garlic, chives, and leeks should also be avoided.
Preparing for a new Dachshund is both exciting and essential. Before bringing your pup home, make sure your home is puppy-proofed: be sure to put away anything that could cause harm, like hazardous tools or plants. Next, acquire all the necessary items for your pup; these include a leash and collar, a crate or pen, food and water bowls, toys, treats, blankets, and chews. Additionally, research local veterinarians and determine which vaccinations may be required. It is also important to establish a consistent schedule for feeding, exercising, and potty-training.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature. The standard size must weigh at least 16 pounds and measure 8-9 inches from the shoulder. The miniature size must weigh 11 pounds or less and measure 5-6 inches from the shoulder. They can range in color from black and tan, reddish-yellow, and solid black or brown. The fur can be short or long, as well as wiry or smooth. No matter the size or coat type, all dachshunds have the characteristic long body and short legs.
Absolutely! Dachshunds are an active dog breed that requires physical and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Being a fairly low-maintenance breed, they generally thrive on regular activity through running around, chasing, going on walks, or engaging in interactive play. They are great at entertaining their owners, and have a natural affinity for agility, flyball, and other activities that require jumping and leaping.
Dachshunds are quite charming and friendly by nature, so usually they get along well with other pets. It is important to establish a proper introduction and ensure that other pets respect the Dachshund's space, as they can be fiercely protective of their owners and can guard their territory from other animals. Socialization should start while the Dachshund is still a puppy, and proper introductions should include plenty of positive reinforcement. With patience and consistency, a Dachshund can learn to trust other animals.
It depends on the age, experience level, and interest of your Dachshund, but in general, you should plan to dedicate at least 30 minutes to training per day. You should break up your training sessions into several smaller sessions throughout the day, perhaps morning, afternoon, and evening, as young dogs can struggle with longer blocks of concentrated training. Furthermore, if your Dachshund has health issues or is an older dog, you may need to adjust your training exercise time accordingly.
