Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an intriguing breed because they exhibit a unique combination of personality traits for a dog – they are fiercely loyal yet independent, loving yet mischievous. They are often described as big dogs in small packages because of their intelligence and strong-willed personalities, and they can easily outmaneuver humans when they have a mind to do so. On the flip side, these lovable pooches are also notorious for their playful side and love for lounging about. They are true companions and bring plenty of joy and laughter into the lives of their owners.
Dachshunds feature a unique coat of either short or long hair that can come in a variety of colors and patterns. The most popular coats for the breed include red, black and tan, piebald, and dapple. Dachshunds who have short hair tend to be sleek and smooth to the touch. Long-haired variants can be more course and wiry with fringes of fur just past the belly and legs. Many owners groom their Dachshunds to keep their coat looking its best.
Dachshunds need a diet made up primarily of high-quality, commercial type kibble that is specifically formulated for them. Some may also benefit from adding moist foods, such as canned foods and cooked meats, fish and eggs for extra nutrition and calories. It is recommended to give them two meals a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Treats should be given in moderation and they should be based on the health and nutritional needs of the specific Dachshund.
Preparation for your new Dachshund should begin before its arrival. Make sure to do research on the breed and its needs, both physical and emotional. Provide a comfortable and safe home environment, including a bed, toys, and food and water dishes. Obtain a collar and tags and look into rabies, flea, and heartworm prevention. Additionally, select a veterinarian and obtain the necessary vaccinations and checkups. Spay or neuter your Dachshund; you should also establish good house rules that your pet will obey consistently and provide plenty of training.
Dachshunds come in two different sizes: standard and miniature. The standard Dachshund is generally considered to be 16-32 pounds when fully grown, with a body length of 16-32 inches. The miniature Dachshund is typically 11 pounds or less and has a body length of 8-11 inches. As with many other breeds, there are variations in size and weight even within these two categories. When considering a Dachshund as a pet, be sure to consult a qualified breeder to find a pup that best fits your household.
Dachshunds have a wide range of preferences when it comes to swimming. Some Dachshunds don't mind taking a dip and find water activities fun, while others would rather not get wet. Generally, swimming activities should be introduced gradually with small, shallow bodies of water, such as a kiddie pool, to help your four-legged friend become accustomed to the sensation of being in the water. Certain breeds may even take to the activity more readily than others, so it's best to get to know your individual pooch to determine their loves or dislikes.
Dachshunds are usually well-suited for multi-pet households, as they generally get along with other animals. However, socialization is key for successful multi-pet living. Be sure to introduce your Dachshund to other pets early, often, and in supervised, structured settings. If your Dachshund didn't grow up with other pets, take your time introducing them and slowly increasing their interactions and exposure. It's best to never leave the Dachshund alone unattended with the other animals.
It can depend on the individual Dachshund and the specific training objectives, however it is recommended to dedicate at least 30 minutes each day to the specific task of training a Dachshund. This training time can include such activities as walking, playing, teaching basic commands, and providing additional mental stimulation. If the Dachshund is to be trained for a specific type of work, such as showing or agility, additional session lengths and more consistent training frequency may be required.
