Questions & Answers
Dachshunds belong to the HoundGroup, which has a centuries-old history. The hound group includes breeds such as Basset Hounds, Bloodhounds, Foxhounds and Beagles. All hound group members are known for their superior sense of smell, as well as for their strong, independent personalities and a long, lean body made for chasing down prey. The Dachshund is unique within the hound group, however, due to its short, stubby legs and its common size variation—from miniature (up to 11 lbs.
Dachshunds, commonly called wiener dogs, are said to be not among the breeds prone to cause allergies even though they have a heavy coat perfect for cuddling. Allergic reactions to pets are usually caused by proteins found in an animal’s skin, dander, saliva, and urine that are microscopic and can float through the air which can cause allergic reactions. With proper diligence to certain types of care, such as brushing the dog thoroughly and grooming to minimize shedding also upgrading air filters and cleaning the floors more regularly, lower the likelihood of triggering a reaction.
Dachshunds require a nutritionally balanced diet to maintain their health and well-being. To provide your pup with the best nutrition possible, look for an age-appropriate dry kibble formulated specifically for Dachshunds. The kibble should include ingredients such as high-quality proteins, healthy fats, and all the vital vitamins and minerals they need. If you'd like to supplement with wet food or treats, consult with your veterinarian for specific recommendations. Make sure your pup's food is fresh and free from mold or other toxins.
Preparing for a new Dachshund doesn't have to be overwhelming or expensive. Start by researching the breed to gain an understanding of their specific needs and personality. You'll want to secure a good quality, often veterinarian recommended, dog food and create a comfortable, safe environment for them to sleep, exercise, and play. Investing in chew toys and puzzle-style feeders will help your new pup stay mentally stimulated during the day and will help them develop better behavior and slower eating habits.
Dachshunds typically do not belong to the “big dog” category since they tend to be on the smaller side, ranging between 8-32 lbs. and 8 inches to 9 inches in height. However, compared to other small breeds, Dachshunds are considered on the larger end and they do have bold, bigger-than-their-body personalities; they are often fearless and their shrill barks may make them more intimidating than they actually are.
While not all Dachshunds are keen on swimming, many owners have found that the long-bodied hounds can become comfortable in the water with some encouragement and gentleness. If your Dachshund decides to try their paws at swimming, you can bet they'll be in for an enjoyable experience! Some Dachshunds will naturally enjoy jumping in the water, while others may need some patience and coaxing to enjoy the pool, lake, or beach.
Dachshunds can be a great loyal companion for kids, and are well known for their patience and reliability. Generally, they are gentle and make great playmates for children, although they do require supervison due to their energetic, hunting-dog nature. They typically get along well with other pets and are usually friendly with other people, making them an ideal breed for social environments. In addition, their shedding is minimal, making them easy to clean up after.
Dachshunds are considered intelligent and very clever dogs, which make them great pets. They are adaptive and eager to please their owners, making them highly trainable. They have impressive problem-solving skills, and some owners even report their dachshunds getting into cabinets and drawers that had been secured with child proof locks. Additionally, they are sometimes used in search and rescue missions, herding, and even prank-related tasks. They are also excellent tracking dogs and make up part of the American Kennel Club's "Scent Work" program.
