Dachshunds are beloved and distinctively shaped dogs, often referred to as wiener dogs or sausage dogs. They're highly intelligent and have a personality that is cunning, adaptable and confident. One of the most interesting things about Dachshunds is that they come in two distinct sizes standard and miniature and three coat types: smooth, wirehaired and longhaired. They also have a wide variety of colors, including solids, dapples and a combination of colors.
Dachshunds are known for their distinctively coats which vary in color and texture. Generally speaking, the double-coated Dachshunds have a soft, short undercoat and a wiry, thick overcoat. The smooth variety of the breed, however, has a short, shiny, and straight outer coat. Dachshund's coats come in a variety of colors, including the standard colors chocolate, black, red, and wild boar. Additionally, Dachshunds that have two different colors on their coat are known as being "Piebald.
Dachshunds are small curious creatures and should not be fed anything that could harm them. Specifically, owners should avoid giving their Dachshunds chocolate, onions and garlic, grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, dairy products, and processed foods such as hot dogs, fries, etc. Owners should also not give a Dachshund too many carbohydrates, as it can lead to obesity. Chewing bones or rawhide treats can also cause gastrointestinal obstruction.
In order to properly prepare your home for your adorable new Dachshund, you should first start by puppy-proofing it. Make sure all power cords, breakables, and toxic substances are out of reach of your pup. Place baby gates in areas of your home you want to keep them out of as well. Secondly, you should create a calm and comfortable atmosphere for them. Setup a bed or comfy cushion in an area that is easily accessible and far away from loud sounds.
Dachshunds, also known as Doxies, Droolers, and Weiner Dogs, come in two sizes, standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds usually weigh between 16 and 32 pounds (7 and 15 kg) and measure 8 to 9 inches (20 to 23 cm) in height at the withers. Miniature Dachshunds are smaller, usually around 11 pounds (5 kg) or less, and typically measure no more than 5 to 6 inches (13–15 cm) in height.
Dachshunds are generally considered an active dog breed. Although Dachshunds have short legs and can't move fast, they can have almost inexhaustible supplies of energy and they are willing to play until you wear them out. Training them to obey could help in controlling their energy levels. They need a reasonable amount of exercise, so if you don’t feel like taking them for an hour-long walk, you could throw fun toys for them to catch or go outside and play some fetch with them instead.
Dachshunds are generally considered good family companions as they tend to get along well with children and are generally receptive to their owners. They are smart, alert, and loyal dogs that make loving and loyal companions and can be devoted and protective of their family. Dachshunds can form strong bonds with other household pets, and may even be good with cats. Kids should be gently supervised to ensure that they interact with the dog in a kind and gentle manner.
Training a Dachshund can be an incredibly rewarding experience. As with any type of pet, consistency and patience are the foundations for successful training. To begin, it's important to understand the breed's personality and behavior. Dachshunds are very loyal and intelligent, and can be easily distracted, so short, frequent training sessions are ideal for them. Start by establishing basic commands, like sit, stay, and come, and be consistent with your reward system. Positive reinforcement is key to helping your dog understand what behavior is desired.
