Questions & Answers
Dachshunds belong to the Hound group of dogs, which is one of seven classifications recognized by the American Kennel Club. Dachshunds, also commonly referred to as wiener, or sausage dogs, due to their body shape, are known for their lovable personality and playful nature. They are also known for their remarkable scenting capabilities and a true love of the outdoors.
Dachshunds have a long, silky coat that can be smooth, wire-haired, or long-haired. The texture of their coat is soft, dense and luxurious to the touch, with longer fur on their head and ears, and their back, legs, and tail are covered in short, fine hair. The coat may come in a variety of colors, including solid black, brown, red, and cream, or it may be bi-colored or tri-colored.
Dachshunds should not be fed human food or unhealthy snacks such as those high in fat, sugar, or salt. Some common items to avoid include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, caffeine, and any food containing xylitol. Additionally, Dachshunds should not be given any bones, as their narrow throats and backs can cause them to choke. Treats should be given in moderation and should always be low in fat and sugar.
Preparing for your new Dachshund is a fun and rewarding experience! Here are some important steps to take to get ready for your newest family member: Begin researching the breed, nutrition and exercise needs; set up a comfortable bed and designated potty area; be sure to have Dachshund-proof toy and treats; arrange for a vet checkup as soon as possible; and make sure the family understands your expectations for your new pet’s behavior. Finally, take your Dachshund to puppy classes to learn basic obedience and socialization skills.
Dachshunds are not considered big dogs. They are generally smaller-sized breeds compared to some other breeds like German Shepherds and Mastiffs. On average, a fully-grown Dachshund will weigh anywhere from 16 to 32 pounds and will be between 8 and 9 inches tall at the shoulders. Dachshunds are often called 'big dogs in little bodies' because of their courageous and loyal personalities. They are friendly, independent, and can be very protective of their owners.
Dachshunds are a unique breed and their love for water activities varies across individual dogs. Some will happily take to the water, while others may only enjoy the occasional dip. Generally speaking, most Dachshunds are content to paddle around at their own pace in relatively shallow water. As with any activity, start slow by introducing the activity and making sure your Dachshund is comfortable. If they show signs of enjoyment, like knowing paws or running straight into the water, it's safe to assume they are happy swimming.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds do get along with other pets if they have been socialized correctly, but it is not guaranteed. As a breed, Dachshunds can be rather possessive of their owners and may bark at, or even try to attack, an unfamiliar pet. As long as they have plenty of socialization and training, Dachshunds can make very affectionate and loyal members of the family.
Training a Dachshund requires consistency, patience and positive reinforcement. Start with basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay' and reward your Dachshund with a treat or praise when they perform correctly. It's important not to become frustrated or yell at them as this can cause them to become anxious or unresponsive. You should stay consistent with the training and not switch up the routine. Using simple and specific words to communicate with them will help them learn quickly. Additionally, it's important to create a safe learning environment and plenty of opportunity for them to explore and play.
