Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are one of the most beloved dog breeds, known for their long bodies, short legs, and cuteness! They are loyal, mischievous, and full of character. Dachshunds are usually friendly and great companion dogs. They are a small breed, so need less exercise than larger breeds, and can fit in small living spaces. They are versatile; they can be lap dogs, play fetch, or even join you on hikes.
While Dachshunds are not considered to be hypoallergenic due to the fact that all dogs have some degree of allergens in their fur, they are deemed to be lower-shedding and lower-allergenic than many other breeds of dogs. Therefore, for those of us that suffer from allergies, they can be a good choice in terms of picking a pet due to the reduced amount of shedding that a Dachshund typically has.
Dachshunds should not be fed bones, rawhide, or other hard chew objects that could possibly fracture their teeth or cause digestive issues. They also should not be fed foods with high levels of fat, sugar, or sodium as this could lead to obesity and other health complications. Additionally, put away any poisonous plants as Dachshunds are adventurous and, due to their short legs, are able to fit into places that other breeds may not, making them more susceptible to eating them.
To become the best puppy parent for your Dachshund, your main goal should be to provide them with a loving and safe home. Try to establish an environment that allows them to feel comfortable and secure. Spend quality time with them every day and offer lots of positive reinforcement when they exhibit good behavior. Make sure to give them plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Provide them with plenty of toys and reward them for learning new behaviors and tricks. Establish an appropriate routine and make sure they follow it consistently. Finally, make sure to provide them with routine veterinary care to keep them healthy.
Dachshunds come in two different sizes--standard and miniature. A standard Dachshund usually weighs between 16 and 32 pounds and is around 8-9 inches tall at their shoulder. The miniature Dachshund usually weighs no more than 11 pounds and is no taller than 5-6 inches at their shoulder.
It really depends on your Dachshund's age and activity level. Generally, an adult Dachshund should receive at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, including at least 10 minutes of walking. An active Dachshund that is younger than two-years-old could require up to an hour of exercise per day. Even short walks can help provide mental and physical stimulation that can benefit your Dachshund by allowing them to express their natural instinct to explore and sniff around.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds can absolutely get along very well with kids! These charming and lovable little dogs usually have a naturally sweet demeanor, making them excellent companions for children. As with all animals, it is important to provide proper socialization and training to ensure they have a positive relationship with kids and other pets. Supervision is also recommended when children are interacting with their Dachshund pet, just as it is with all other family pets. In addition, it is important to ensure Dachshunds have enough exercise so they don't become destructive out of boredom.
Training a Dachshund can be a difficult thing as they are a very energetic breed and require consistency in order for the training to be effective. With that being said, with patience, consistency, kindness and understanding, training can be rewarding and successful. Understanding the natural behaviors a Dachshund will often display, such as being brave, alert, curious, and playful can help guide the type of training and keep the process more enjoyable. It is important to provide adequate physical and mental activities for socialization and prevention of boredom and possible destructive behaviors.
