Questions & Answers
Dachshunds have a unique scent! The breed's signature smell is strongest when they are out walking or playing in the park. They also have an unusual short stature, which can actually be helpful on hikes and longer treks. This small size enables dachshunds to travers difficult terrain and rocky pathways without issue. Beyond size, these dogs have a devoted, energetic and loyal nature. They're often seen forming close bonds with family members and make a great addition to any home.
Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic, however they do have very low levels of dander and shedding and low levels of allergens, which makes them a great choice for people with allergies. All dogs have some degree of shedding, but the Dachshund's coat is much easier to manage and care for. Keeping their coat in good condition is essential to keeping allergen levels at a minimum.
Dachshunds should not be fed chocolate, onions, avocado, alcohol, or any kind of processed, sugary treats. These items can be poisonous or cause gastric upset, and too much processed food can lead to long-term health issues. Additionally, it's important to never feed these dogs bones, small pieces of rubber, plastic, metal or any other objects that can cause choking or other significant health problems. Dachshunds should also not be allowed to eat table scraps, as it can create digestive issues or lead to them becoming overweight.
Dachshunds have some unique requirements that make them special. Firstly, these dogs require frequent exercise, including walks, running, and even playing outdoors to stay healthy. They also need regular mental stimulation, such as basic obedience training and new experiences. Furthermore, they need regular grooming to maintain their long, beautiful coats and frequent veterinary check-ups to make sure they stay healthy. Additionally, Dachshunds may require extra care when dealing with extreme weather and illnesses, especially those with a short coat or even a double coat.
Dachshunds, or "wiener dogs," generally range in size depending on the type. Standard Dachshunds usually weigh between 16-32 pounds and are 8-9 inches tall at the shoulder. Miniature Dachshunds are much smaller, usually weighing no more than 11 pounds and standing just 5-6 inches tall. Though their size can vary slightly, they tend to remain rather small dogs. It is important to remember that — because of their long, slender build — they can easily become obese and should be fed accordingly.
Whether or not Dachshunds like to swim is largely dependent on the individual dog. Some breeds tend to enjoy swimming, while others may not care for the activity. Generally speaking, Dachshunds are small dogs so the breed is not well-suited for swimming due to their short legs and disproportionately large heads. However, Dachshunds can learn to enjoy the activity with the right amount of encouragement and training. With proper instruction, they can even learn to enjoy it and become strong swimmers.
Dachshunds are typically friendly and can usually get along with other pets. However, it is important to ensure that both pets are properly introduced to each other and given the chance to adjust to their new home in a safe, controlled manner. Socializing both the Dachshund and any other pet in your home is key to ensure they become comfortable with each other and create a harmonious relationship. Dachshunds may initially be wary of other pets but, with proper guidance and gentle introductions, they should be able to adjust to their new surroundings fairly quickly.
Dachshunds are renowned for their intelligence and are often referred to as "gifted professionals" in the world of canines! With training and consistency, Dachshunds are known to develop strong connections with their humans and can quickly learn complex commands and tricks. Their acute intelligence affords them the capability of problem-solving, making them perfect companions for anyone with a dynamic lifestyle. Dachshunds are also thought to be one of the most loyal breeds, renowned for their strong sense of devotion and dedication to their human pals.
