A Dachshund, commonly referred to as a ‘sausage dog’, is a breed of short-legged hound originally bred in Germany centuries ago for the purpose of hunting badgers and other small game. The breed is characterized by their unmistakable long-bodied, short-legged build that is ideally suited for burrowing and digging into badger dens. In addition to their famous hunting abilities, Dachshunds are known to have friendly personalities and lively spirits which make them popular family pets.
Dachshunds are not typically considered hypoallergenic. While the breed does not produce a large amount of dander – the dead skin and fur cells which cause most allergies – they are still prone to producing saliva which can become airborne and trigger reactions in people prone to allergies. In order to keep allergies under control, it's important to bathe and groom them regularly, and to vacuum and dust often. There are also a variety of hypoallergenic pet products available which may help to minimize the amount of dander and saliva produced.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything with high-fat content, foods they are unfamiliar with, sweets, or snacks. Even though it's tempting, you should avoid giving them treats like candy, cake, ice cream, or human food as they can lead to serious health problems.
