Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is an iconic, short-legged breed of dog native to Germany. The Standard Dachshunds have elongated, muscular bodies covered in short, glossy fur; Miniature Dachshunds, as their name suggests, are smaller and typically have a wire-haired coat. Both breeds have powerful and determined personalities along with a delightful curiosity and love of adventure, which endear them to many pet owners. Dachshunds also have an excellent sense of smell and make great watchdogs.
Whether or not a Dachshund will cause you to be allergic depends on several different factors. First, it is important to determine your level of sensitivity to allergens in general. There are several different kinds of dog-related allergies, including seasonal allergies from pollen, and year-round allergies to proteins found in a dog's skin or saliva. Some people may not be affected at all, while others may be more prone. Additionally, there are specific breeds of dogs that may cause a greater degree of allergic reaction.
It is generally recommended that pet owners avoid feeding Dachshunds large pieces of meat, bones, chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, and anything containing caffeine or alcohol. There may also be certain food items that are not specifically toxic to Dachshunds, but can lead to digestive problems or other health issues. These include avocados, corn, onions, garlic, chives, and dairy products like milk, cheese, and ice cream.
Dachshunds have quite a few special requirements that owners should be aware of. Diet is essential to ensure their spine and joints stay healthy as these dogs can become easily overweight. Dachshunds require regular exercise to prevent possible joint issues that can arise from inactivity. Due to their long backs, special attention should be taken to keep them from jumping off of furniture or going down stairs as this can be damaging to their spines. Grooming of their predominantly long hair is important as well to keep their coat healthy and in great condition.
Dachshunds come in 3 distinct sizes – Standard, Miniature, and Kaninchen (or "Rabbit"). The Standard size, which can weigh up to 32 pounds, is the traditional size with an average height between 8 and 9 inches. The Miniature size is much smaller, with an average height of 5 to 6 inches and weights usually no more than 11 pounds. Lastly, the smaller Kaninchen size is even tinier, weighing an average of 9 pounds with a height of 4 to 5 inches.
Dachshunds are an energetic breed that needs moderate to strenuous exercise on a daily basis. This active breed should be taken on long daily walks and may benefit from playing games such as fetch. Depending on your pet's age and health, they may also find good exercise in more strenuous activities such as running, agility games, and even swimming. In addition to regular exercise, this breed also needs plenty of mental stimulation to keep them healthy and happy. Toys and puzzles are recommended to help strengthen your Dachshund's mental agility and challenge their problem-solving skills.
Dachshunds can make great family pets when given proper and consistent socialization. In general, they love attention and being pet and can get along very well with children when given the opportunity to grow accustomed to them. Dachshunds are friendly and playful, usually responding positively to gentle handling. However, like with any pet, there is no guarantee that they will be great with kids unless they have been socialized properly from an early age. It is always a good idea to supervise young children around any pet to ensure everyone is treated with respect.
Training a Dachshund can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both you and your pup. Start your training as soon as you get your Dachshund, and begin with simple commands like sit and stay. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats or showing your pup lots of love and affection, when they accomplish something you want them to do. Additionally, you should keep their training sessions short, using commands that they already know so that they don't become overwhelmed.
