Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are known for being lovable, loyal, and playful companions. There are some unique facts about them that you may not know! For instance, Dachshunds typically have long bodies, short legs, and short fur. Plus, their name literally translates to "badger dog," as these pups were originally bred to hunt badgers.
While no breed of dog is 100% guaranteed to be hypoallergenic, Dachshunds are considered to have a low-shedding coat that produces less dander (a common allergen). Because of this, many owners find that Dachshunds are less likely to trigger allergies in people sensitive to animal fur and dander. However, it is important to remember that each individual dog can differ in terms of its allergen production.
Dachshunds are prone to weight gain, so it's important to avoid feeding them high-calorie human snacks like chips, cookies, and ice cream. Additionally, certain human food can be harmful to Dachshunds, such as chocolate, grapes, and raisins. Furthermore, Dachshunds should not eat bones or bones that are too small as they may splinter and cause injury to their throat and digestive system.
Becoming a great puppy parent for your Dachshund starts with understanding their unique needs. Dachshunds are intelligent and can be trained relatively easily. Start with a normal routine, making sure your pup gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Make sure to provide them with lots of positive reinforcement, as this will go a long way in helping instill good behavior. Additionally, Dachshunds tend to be social dogs and will benefit from interacting with other animals and people.
Dachshunds typically range in size from 8-9" tall and usually weigh between 16-32 pounds. While some small dachshunds may be less than 8" or weigh no more than 11 lbs, and some larger proportions may reach up to about 8.5" tall and sometimes over 35 lbs, the majority of them usually stay within the typical range. Given their short legs, they tend to appear bigger than they actually are due to their low profile.
Dachshunds need moderate physical and mental stimulation to remain healthy. As a rule of thumb, adult Dachshunds should get around 30 minutes of daily exercise such as Playtime, walking, or running in a safe, open area, and 10-15 minutes of additional activities (i.e. trick training, mentally stimulating tasks, etc.). Puppies should have shorter exercise sessions that gradually increase in time as they become used to more strenuous activity. In addition, all Dachshunds should have some sort of interactive or puzzle toy to keep their minds active.
Many Dachshunds get along splendidly with kids! These friendly and energetic pets make for loyal companions and can easily become an integral part of the family. In addition to being playful and affectionate, Dachshunds are known for their keen intelligence, which allows them to learn tricks and commands quickly and easily. When Dachshunds are properly socialized from a young age, their instinctive friendliness and adaptability to a family with children is second to none.
Absolutely! Dachshunds are known as intelligent and lively companions. They have had success in many areas, including obedience competitions, agility courses, and even search and rescue operations. This breed is willing to learn and can easily pick up on a wide range of commands, performing happily and consistently with ample praise and reward. Not only are these little dogs eager to please, but they are also surprisingly resilient and tenacious. Dachshunds have proven to be determined and resourceful champions, capable of conquering obstacles both real and imaginary.
