Questions & Answers
Dachshunds, sometimes referred to as "wiener dogs" or "sausage dogs", are an extremely popular breed of dogs. They were bred in Germany centuries ago and were used to hunt small prey, such as badgers, rabbits, and foxes. Fun facts about Dachshunds include that they come in two sizes: standard and miniature, and two coat types: short-haired and long-haired. They are known for their short legs, long bodies, and adorable ears.
The Dachshund has a unique coat that varies from long-haired, smooth-haired and wire-haired. The long-haired Dachshund has a glossy, silky and shaggy coat. The smooth-haired Dachshund has a short, dense and glossy coat, while the wire-haired Dachshund has a harsh, thick and weather-resistant coat. All Dachshunds need to be groomed regularly, including brushing, trimming and giving them baths. This will help keep their coats healthy and in good condition.
Yes, Dachshunds do have some special dietary needs due to their size and level of activity. As with all dogs, Dachshunds need a balanced diet with the correct amount of proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. However, due to their size, Dachshunds may require smaller meals more frequently, as opposed to one large meal per day. Additionally, Dachshunds may need lower amounts of fat in their diet since they are more prone to obesity and gastric problems than larger breeds.
Before bringing your Dachshund home, you should be sure to equip your home with enough pet supplies to make sure your pup is happy and healthy. Ensure your Dachshund has their own crate or bed to call home, a comfy spot in your house or apartment, and plenty of food and water dishes. Set up an area outside with a fenced-in yard or dog run. Make sure you have a variety of toys that will engage your pup and help alleviate boredom.
It depends on how one defines a 'big' dog. Dachshunds typically weigh in between 16 32 pounds and reach heights between 8 9 inches at the shoulder; so, they would be considered small to medium in size when compared to other breeds. Nonetheless, they can still be quite large when compared to toy breeds. What makes Dachshunds unique is that they are known for their muscular build, so even though they may be small in size, they have a lot of character and can often times command much more space than a similarly sized pooch.
Dachshunds can enjoy swimming, although they are not necessarily built for it like other breeds. Many of them will do it if presented with the opportunity and the correct environment to do so. However, owners should take caution and not force them to swim, as the breed is not what you would call “water-ready” and may not have the necessary bodily functions to do so naturally. If you do choose to take your Dachshund for a swim, you should ensure it is in a controlled environment and do so with appropriate safety gear such as a life jacket.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds make loving and loyal family companions for households with children. They are incredibly intelligent and playful breeds known for having an excellent temperament with kids. Furthermore, their small size makes them great playmates for young children and even smaller adults, as they can play around safely. As with all breeds, however, it is important to provide proper training and socialization from an early age to ensure they become accustomed to interacting with kids in a positive manner. It is also important to teach your young children how to interact and play safely with the Dachshund.
Training a Dachshund takes a lot of patience and consistency; however, the effort is absolutely worth it. Start off by making sure your pup is currently up to date on all of its vaccinations and regular check-ups. A basic obedience class is a great way to begin training and will help your Dachshund get familiar with commands and proper behaviors. Set up a regular schedule and consistent routine for activities such as crate time, potty training, exercise and meals.
