Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are classified as hounds, which is part of the AKC Non-Sporting Group of breeds. Dachshunds have been bred for centuries to hunt badgers, and because of their determined and fearless natures, they do their job well. The outline of a Dachshund's body is long and narrow, which allows for a lot of flexibility and maneuverability. Typically, these sweet and loyal dogs make wonderful companions, especially in families with children.
Dachshunds have a unique coat, consisting of a thick undercoat and a long, smooth, outer coat that can come in many different colors. The outer coat can be wiry or silky, and can range from coarse to somewhat wavy. This breed sheds moderately throughout the year and should be brushed regularly for maintenance. Their body is also covered in a thick, insulating coat for protection in the cold months. They have a water-resistant double coat which will repel wet weather, dirt, and other debris.
Dachshunds generally have the same dietary needs as other breeds of small dog, though as they are exceptionally long, small-boned and prone to obesity, they may need special care when it comes to their diet. As puppies, high-quality, nutrient-rich food is recommended for growth. As adults, a balanced diet with moderate protein is best, and high fiber foods should be avoided due to the risk of them becoming impacted in the Dachshund's elongated digestion tract, leading to a condition called bloat. It is also important to be mindful of portion sizes;
Preparing for a new Dachshund can seem like a daunting task, but with some advance planning and research it can be made much easier. First, be sure to locate a good veterinarian that is experienced with treating Dachshunds and schedule a well-check appointment for your pet as soon as possible. Additionally, purchase essential items such as a crate, food dishes, collar and lead, and a soft bed for your furry friend to get comfortable in.
Dachshunds are unique in size and appearance, often prompting the question if they can considered big dogs. Generally, dachshunds are considered small to medium size dogs. The American Kennel Club recognizes three different varieties of dachshunds based on size, with the standard measuring 8-9 inches (20-23 cm) at the shoulder, the miniature 5-6 inches (13-15 cm) at the shoulder, and the ‘tweenie’ being in between.
Generally speaking, the amount of walking that is best for a Dachshund depends on their age, fitness level, and overall health. It is recommended that at a minimum, you provide your Dachshund 30 minutes of activity per day, and that should include 15 minutes of walking. You can spread that across two or three walks a day, with at least one of those walks occurring in the morning or evening. However, if your Dachshund is particularly active or particularly young, you may want to increase walk time to 45-60 minutes or more.
Dachshunds make an excellent family dog, as they are incredibly friendly and loyal. They genuinely enjoy the company of people and get along particularly well with children of all ages. They are highly intelligent and can learn new tricks and commands with relative ease. With their energetic nature and small size, they also make great companions for running, walking, and even fetching games. Furthermore, since Dachshunds are usually quite active and alert, they can serve as an alert system of sorts, barking when someone unfamiliar is around.
Training a Dachshund requires persistence, patience and consistency, as the breed can be particularly stubborn. To ensure the best results, create a clear routine with a rewards-based system. A well-trained Dachshund will respond best if provided with positive reinforcement in the form of treats or verbal compliments. When starting formal training, ensure your Dachshund is well exercised beforehand a tired dog is more likely to remain focused during the session. Begin with shorter training sessions and slowly build up, introducing new commands as your pet's understanding and knowledge grows.
