Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Dachshunds is how they are not only friendly and smart, but also quite unique in their appearance. They come in all sizes, from the Standard who can reach up to 9kg, to miniature Dachshunds which can be as small as2.7kg, and even double-dappled, brindle or wirehaired Dachshunds. This pup is also quite courageous for its size, with a history of hunting badgers (given its name), and can even be found in various sports like Agility and Earthdog.
Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic but they may be suitable for people with certain allergies. The breed does not shed very much and the lack of an undercoat reduces the amount of dander which can help if someone has an allergy to animals. Some people with allergies to cats and dogs may find that the absence of an undercoat reduces the allergens that cause their reactions. However, anyone considering a pet should have a discussion with their doctor to ensure they make an informed decision.
Dachshunds need food that is designed to support their unique nutritional needs and, depending on age and lifestyle, will require a balanced and complete feed. Commercial high-quality dog foods are usually the best option, as they provide the balanced diet that Dachshunds require. However, always carefully read the labels to ensure that the food is suitable for Dachshunds as some foods designed for large dogs may not be appropriate. Aim for a dry food that is high in protein, low in fat and has additional vitamins and minerals.
Preparing for your new Dachshund involves gathering important supplies, making sure your home is safe and pet-proof, and getting your pup acclimated to his new environment. Start by collecting items such as a collar and leash, food and water bowls, a bed, toys, treats, and grooming supplies. Then, take time to create a safe space for your pup by checking for furniture that may topple over, areas where cords may be chewed, and clearing away any potentially hazardous items.
Dachshunds, or "sausage dogs" due to their small, elongated bodies, may not be considered big dogs compared to other breeds, but they are larger than most toy breeds. While an adult Dachshund typically weighs around 20 to 30 pounds and stands around 8-9 inches tall, size varies depending on the breed, with miniature Dachshunds usually being much smaller. However, due to their large ears, muscular legs, and tough disposition, they may appear larger than they are.
Ideally, your Dachshund should get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day – with up to an hour if they’re still young and spry! Taking them for a walk is a great way to keep them active and healthy, as it provides them with the mental and physical stimulation they need. This can be split up into two 15-minute walks, or just one 30-minute session – either way, your pup will be sure to appreciate it.
It is certainly possible for Dachshunds to get along with children, depending on the individual dog's personality and disposition. Generally speaking, these energetic and trainable dogs are good-natured and will often form strong bonds with kids. Training, socialization, and strong leadership are essential for any situation where kids and dogs are sharing a household. It is also important to remember that Dachshunds, like all dogs, can have various levels of tolerance for noise, roughhousing, jumping, and other activities that are normal for children.
Absolutely! Dachshunds are considered smart dogs. They are incredibly loyal, lively, and highly trainable, making them exceptionally obedient and reliable pooches. Their heightened intelligence means they're particularly adept at learning commands and tricks, as well as solving puzzles. While they may be more stubborn than other breeds, dachshunds are clever and capable of adapting to different environments. They can sense quickly changing emotions and are social animals that absolutely require stimulation when it comes to playtime. This makes them well suited for families looking for a pup with lots of personality and spunk.
