Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are clever, independent small dogs with a big personality. It's important to remember that while they can make wonderful pets in the right home, these little dogs were originally bred to hunt and their prey drive remains. They may be small but they often think they can take on a much larger animal than themselves, so socialization and training is key to ensure they know their boundaries. Dachshunds require daily exercise, so it's important to ensure they get regular walks and have plenty of safe areas to play in.
Unlike their larger relatives, the Dachshund is renowned for being relatively low-shedding, and as a result, is not likely to cause an increase in allergies in most households. Allergies are triggered when allergens such as dust, dander, pollen, or pet saliva gets into our airways. There is a chance that Dachshunds could cause pet-related allergies, as all animals produce saliva and dander, but the likelihood is significantly lower than with most other breeds of dog.
Feeding your Dachshund can be a fun and rewarding experience. A diet designed to keep them healthy and at their ideal weight should include dry kibble, fresh vegetables, a few treats, and plenty of water. Dry kibble is the basis of a good diet for a Dachshund and should contain all of the necessary vitamins and minerals. Be sure to look for a quality food made specifically for small breed dogs. Fresh vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, and squash provide nutrients like fiber, potassium, calcium, and beta-carotene.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Dachshund starts with understanding their behavior and having a good handle on the basics of puppy parenting. The American Kennel Club suggests that you provide your pup with daily exercise, encourage socialization with other pups, know your pup’s health and nutrition needs, practice positive training methods, and ensure they have access to a safe environment with lots of love and attention. Focus on your pup’s breed-specific characteristics such as their energy needs, and know their personality so that you can adjust activities to meet their needs.
It is difficult to predict the exact size of a Dachshund puppy, as the breed can range in size from 8 to 32 pounds. Generally speaking, adult pet Dachshunds can range from 11 to 16 inches in height, although smaller or larger sizes are not uncommon. Puppies tend to grow rapidly in the first six months to a year, but may continue to gain weight and length up to two years of age, especially for the miniature breeds.
The amount of time you should spend walking your Dachshund will depend on the age and health condition of your particular dog. Generally speaking, a healthy adult Dachshund should receive at least 30 minutes of activity (including walking) on a daily basis. However, younger Dachshunds may require more time, while senior Dachshunds may need less time. Additionally, if you live in a particularly hot climate, it's best to limit the time spent outside and instead opt for shorter, more frequent walks throughout the day.
Dachshunds can make a great fit for first-time owners because they have a loyal and loving nature. These dogs are small and require less exercise than larger breeds, making them a good choice for owners who may not have as much physical activity to spare. They also require minimal grooming, which makes them a low-maintenance choice. Mental stimulation is important with any dog, so it's important to invest in interactive toys and activities to keep your dachshund intellectually engaged.
Dachshunds are often considered to be very intelligent dogs due to their quick learning ability and creative problem-solving skills. They show a remarkable aptitude for picking things up very quickly, as well as an impressive level of loyalty to their owners. Dachshunds have a good memory and are known to remember commands for months or even years after they are initially taught. Additionally, these dogs are able to quickly understand the intention behind any action and react accordingly.
