Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are wonderfully fun, amusing dogs. One fun fact about Dachshunds is that they are nicknamed 'sausage dogs' due to their elongated body. They are also known as 'wiener dogs' or 'hot dogs'. Another interesting fact is that despite their short legs, Dachshunds are surprisingly fast, capable of reaching speeds of up to 18 miles per hour! Dachshunds come in two coat varieties smooth and wire and both their adorable short legs and floppy ears make them instantly recognizable.
Dachshunds do not shed in the same manner as some other breeds, however they are known to lose some of their fur. It's important to note that the amount of shedding a dachshund experiences can vary from dog to dog, as well as how much hair they shed. Generally, a dachshund with short hair may not shed as much as one with long hair. Grooming and regularly brushing a dachshund is extremely beneficial for preventing excessive shedding or matting.
Dachshunds should not be fed any food that has been determined to be unsafe for them. This includes foods that are high in fat content, contain artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors, and those that are toxic. Foods that should be avoided for Dachshunds include grapes, avocados, popcorn, xylitol, onions, garlic, and alcoholic beverages. These items can cause severe digestive upset and, in some cases, can even be fatal.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Dachshund requires time, patience, and dedication. First, you need to understand the fundamentals of puppy behavior and the needs of the breed. Make sure to attend to their social, physical, and emotional needs, especially during puppyhood, to create a strong bond between you and your pup. Ensure proper nutrition by feeding your pup quality food and scheduling regular visits to the vet. Crate train your pup to create desirable behavior and watch for signs of discomfort and stress.
Dachshunds are not traditionally considered to be big dogs. Generally, Dachshunds weigh between 16 and 32 pounds and stand about 8-9 inches tall at the shoulder. They are on the smaller side compared to many other breeds, but can still be considered medium-sized depending on the individual and context. Through selective breeding, 'giant' Dachshunds have been produced that weigh up to 42 pounds, however these dogs are not considered a standard variety and are rare.
Dachshunds have a unique relationship with water, as some may enjoy swimming while others prefer to stay on dry land. Generally, Dachshunds have a strong sense of self-preservation, so if they are not used to being in or around water, they may not be keen on getting in the pool. Additionally, the shape of a Dachshund's body can make swimming difficult for them. However, if they have been properly introduced to water in a safe and comfortable manner, a Dachshund may learn to love swimming and even splash around a bit.
Dachshunds can be a great choice for the first-time dog owner. Though they may require more patience and consistency than other breeds, Dachshunds are fiercely loyal and can make wonderful companions. They are intelligent dogs and can be trained effectively with patience and guidance. While they are often one-person dogs, they are devoted to their family and are always excited when someone new comes to visit. Dachshunds are very sociable and usually enjoy meeting new people.
Dachshunds are quite intelligent and have a great capacity to learn quickly. They have an aptitude for understanding instructions, listening to commands, and forming faithful bonds with their humans. As a breed, Dachshunds are alert, active and perceptive. They are affectionate and excel at entertaining their humans with imaginative angles and remarkable imitations. If given a task, they can quickly utilize their remarkable problem-solving skills, energy, and ambition in order to complete a task successfully.
