Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an intelligent and loyal breed that comes in two sizes (standard and miniature) and three coat varieties (smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired).
Dachshunds, like most dog breeds, can cause some people to have allergies. While it is not possible to guarantee that you will never have allergies with a Dachshund, the risks are much lower than many other breeds. Allergens coming from the dander, saliva and urine of dogs can cause allergic reactions, however, Dachshunds generally have much less shedding and produce less dander than other breeds, thus reducing the potential for allergies. Moreover, regular brushing will remove dead skin cells and reduce the amount of allergens in the air even more.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything other than kibble, vegetables, and specific treats specially made for them. You should avoid feeding them cooked bones, rawhide chews, chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, or any other foods that may be toxic to them. You should also never feed them pork, beef, poultry, or eggs in any form, as these can cause health problems. To be safe, always check with your veterinarian before feeding Dachshunds any new food item.
Start by researching and learning about the breed's needs and history to gain a better understanding of your pup's specific needs. Then, give your pup plenty of love and attention. Spend quality time playing and cuddling regularly to ensure your pup is getting the socialization and exercise they need. Schedule regular vet checkups and follow up on any health concerns as soon as they arise. Ensure their diet is properly balanced and meet all their nutritional requirements. Provide plenty of toys and safe space for exploration both inside and out.
Dachshunds are a small breed of dog, typically weighing between 16 to 32 pounds. While they may appear to be quite big compared to other small breeds, in comparison to other larger breeds of dogs like Labrador Retrievers, they are considered to be a much smaller breed. In addition, while Dachshunds have a long body, their legs are proportionately shorter in comparison, making them appear short and stout in size. Dachshunds typically stand anywhere from 8 to 9 inches tall and can measure up to a maximum of 16 inches in length.
While it is possible for most dogs -including Dachshunds -to go running with their owners, it is important to take into consideration your dog's breed, size, age, and health before doing so. Adult Dachshunds should generally not take part in extremely strenuous activities due to their short legs and relatively long body. Also, their short coat does not provide much protection from heat or cold, so you should consider the seasons and temperature when exercising your Dachshund.
Yes, Dachshunds are usually good with other pets under the right conditions. First of all, they must be well-socialized to be comfortable around other animals. If Dachshunds have early and positive exposure to other animals, they are generally friendly with them. Make sure all pets in a household are spayed/neutered, as this will stop them from competing for dominance or attracting undesired attention. Also, give them enough space to cohabitate peacefully.
Dachshunds are notorious for their intelligence, tenacity, and loyalty. They are resourceful, playful, and independent. Despite their small stature, they make excellent watchdogs and are known to outsmart their family members. They are often quick to learn tricks and excel in obedience/agility classes. With proper training and socialization, Dachshunds can be the perfect companion for any family. They are full of personality and their charming nature make them irresistable. Although these dogs may be mischievous, they are truly loyal and intelligent friends.
