Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are small, but mighty energetic dogs, and have some truly unique fun facts associated with them! For example, this short-legged breed was originally bred to hunt badgers hundreds of years ago. In addition, these adorable canines have two sizes, a standard and miniature, which can weigh up to 32 pounds and 11 pounds respectively. Interestingly, Dachshunds come in three coat type varieties: Smooth, Wirehaired, and Longhaired.
While Dachshunds are known as low-shedding breeds, they are not completely non-shedding. This breed does have a double coat that can periodically shed during certain times of the year. Dachshunds are considered to be low-maintenance grooming-wise but regular brushing is still necessary to help remove the dead hairs and help control the shedding. Some Dachshunds can also benefit from a regular bath to keep their coat looking good. It is also recommended to trim their nails regularly in order to promote good foot health.
Dachshunds should not be fed foods that are high in fat, such as fatty cuts of meat, processed meats, high fat cheeses, fried foods and some table scraps. Many people think that bones are okay to feed dachshunds, but they can be dangerous as they can splinter and cause injuries or even obstructions. Other table scraps, such as onion, garlic, raw eggs, raw potatoes and avocado should also be avoided as they can be toxic to your pup.
If you are considering getting a Dachshund, there are certain essentials you should purchase beforehand to make sure they are safe and comfortable in their new home. A collar with tags should be one of the first items on your checklist and it should include pertinent information about your pup such as their name, your address, and phone number. Additionally, purchasing a crate is recommended as it will give them a safe place of their own where they can retreat to if necessary.
Dachshunds come in two different size varieties: standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds measure between 8 and 9 inches, and weigh between 16 and 32 pounds, while miniature Dachshunds measure 5 to 6 inches, and weigh 11 pounds or less. The two size varieties of Dachshunds possess the same outgoing personality, making them beloved pups of all shapes and sizes. No matter the size of the Dachshund you choose, they are sure to fill your home with love and loyalty.
While it is possible to take a Dachshund running, it's not always the best option. Depending on the age of your Dachshund and the intensity of the run, you should consider other activities such as walking or playing fetch. Dachshunds are prone to back and joint problems, and running or jogging can lead to joint stiffness or even injuries. Instead, a moderate pace and a comfortable place for your Dachshund to rest can be beneficial for their overall health.
Dachshunds can be excellent family dogs when given proper training and discipline. Although they are generally known for their stubborn personalities, they can be very loyal and affectionate companions. They are also quite active and able to adapt to different lifestyles. Dachshunds also tend to get along well with children and other family pets. As long as they are provided with adequate exercise and companionship, they can be a great addition to any loving home. Overall, this breed is a fantastic choice for families who are looking for a loyal, intelligent, and endearing companion.
Training a Dachshund does require patience and dedication but the end result will be a well-behaved, obedient pet. In order to effectively train your pet, start by building trust and focus on positive reinforcement. Start by training in short bursts and use treats and praise to incentivize them to follow through with the proper behaviors. Make sure to remain consistent with your training methods and also incorporate activities like play and walks as part of your regular routine. It's important to keep the training fun and rewarding in order to maximize your training outcomes.
