Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are one of the oldest dog breeds that originate from Germany. Not only are they great companions, but they're also full of fun and interesting facts. For example, the name "Dachshund" comes from the German words "dachs" for badger and "hund" for dog. They have short legs and long bodies, which is why they're sometimes referred to as "Wiener Dogs" or "sausage dogs".
Dachshunds are not considered to be non-shedding dogs. Although the breed is not known to be heavy shedders, they do shed some throughout the year and especially during the spring and fall months. Regular brushing can help reduce the amount of dander and hair around your home. If you're looking for a low-shedding breed, the Dachshund may not be the best choice.
Dachshunds should not be fed pork, processed foods, artificial food additives, rawhide bones, raw eggs, grapes, raisins, chocolate, caffeine, high-fat snacks, popcorn, and anything with the sweetener xylitol. In addition, since small breed dogs like Dachshunds can develop dental issues, they should not be given hard, chewy treats. It is generally best to avoid human table scraps unless what is offered is low in fat and sodium.
Dachshunds generally have a few special requirements that owners should be aware of. For example, they need plenty of physical and mental stimulation, as they are quite active and have a natural desire to explore. Additionally, because of their long backs, they can be prone to back injuries so they should not be allowed to jump from heights or be overweight. It's also important that their claws are regularly trimmed (once every couple of weeks) to prevent damage to carpet and furniture. Lastly, they should be brushed daily to remove dead hair and to keep their coat healthy.
Dachshunds typically range in size according to breed; those classified as miniature are typically 11 pounds or less in weight and 8-9 inches in height — measuring between the dog's withers (shoulder blades) and their paw pads. On the other hand, the standard Dachshunds are typically 16-32 pounds and 8-9 inches in height. It's also important to remember that all Dachshunds have long bodies and relatively short legs. So, with unique proportions, even larger Dachshunds may not seem as tall as other breeds.
The amount of daily exercise your Dachshund needs depends on their age, size, and activity level. Generally, a Dachshund should get at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise a day such as walking, running, or playing fetch with a toy. However, this number can vary depending on your individual pet, so it's important to consult your veterinarian to ensure your pup is getting the right amount of exercise that's right for them.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds can get along well with other pets, such as cats and small dogs. In order for Dachshunds to coexist peacefully in a household, it is important that they are socialized early on and obedience trained. With proper introduction and good pet etiquette, Dachshunds are often able to form social relationships with other pets. Of course, many factors must be taken into consideration for successful pet integration, including prior experience, personality, and age.
Training a Dachshund requires care and patience. While their smaller size makes them attractive, they are also quite active and require regular exercise, which should be catered to through short walks and playtime. To effectively train your Dachshund, start with the basics: use positive reinforcement to reward good behaviour while redirecting any negative behaviour. Make sure to keep training sessions short, and mix things up with different activities and battles of the minds. When establishing house rules, be consistent and do not give in to your pup's begging this will only frustrate you and your pooch.
