Questions & Answers
Dachshunds, also known as 'wiener dogs', are a fun breed of dog to own! They may be small, but these dogs have big personalities. Did you know that they were originally bred to hunt badgers and other tunnels animals? They have long bodies with short legs that help them to navigate through tight spaces. They also have an innate sense of smell which makes them great hunters. Dachshunds come in two distinct sizes standard and miniature and a variety of colors. They make great companion animals and a very loyal breed.
It is not necessarily true that Dachshunds will cause someone to have allergies as they are low-shedding dogs and do not produce a lot of dander. However, everyone has different sensitivities to allergens, so it is difficult to predict a person's reactivity to a specific breed of dog. Some people who are allergic to cats may also be allergic to dogs, but that doesn't mean everyone who is allergic to cats will be allergic to dogs.
Dachshunds require a specific diet that is tailored to the breed’s unique needs. For this reason, it's important to consider quality products from trusted brands when selecting the best food for a Dachshund. Ideally, the food should be formulated with the right balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Choose a food that includes real meat as its primary ingredient, as well as healthy sources of fat such as fish oils or chicken fat.
Before welcoming your new Dachshund into your home, it's important to make several preparations. Make sure there are clear safe spaces that are free from hazards such as cords or objects that they can chew on, and that no furniture or other items are blocking off the areas they can access. Create a space that is separated from the rest of the house with a baby-gate or other pet-proofing tools. Purchase or make a comfortable bed for your pup that is away from drafts and won't be near possible exits.
Dachshunds can come in various sizes, depending on where you purchase them. Generally, they come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Standard Dachshunds are the biggest, being around 11 to 32 pounds and 8 to 9 inches tall. These dogs are commonly found at pet stores and are the most popular size for the breed. Miniature Dachshunds are a bit smaller, weighing 11 pounds or less and standing 5 to 6 inches tall.
It is possible to take a Dachshund running with you. However, it is important to assess the health and energy level of your pet before you set off. Some breeds of Dachshunds are prone to joint issues due to their body shape, so it would be wise to exercise caution and take it easy on your pup. Be sure to start with short runs and increase the distance gradually to give your Dachshund ample time to adjust to the exercise. It is also important to provide plenty of breaks for your pup to rest and hydrate.
Generally, Dachshunds do get along with other pets, as they are typically friendly dogs. Of course, in order for the relationship to be balanced and rewarding, it is generally recommended to socialize them to other animals early and often. Dachshunds can be very loving companions that are able to connect well with other animals, provided proper introductions and guidance. If a Dachshund is raised properly in a healthy environment with positive relationships to other animals, they will tend to form strong bonds.
The amount of time spent training Dachshunds varies depending on the individual dog and their level of experience. A young puppy for instance, may require around 30 minutes of training each day to teach basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Overtime, as the dog masters these commands and progresses, daily training can be reduced. An adult Dachshund who has already achieved basic obedience training may need only 10 to 15 minutes of practice per day to stay sharp. Ultimately, it's important that owners find the amount of time that works best for their individual pet.
