Dachshunds are a breed of small hound dog that belong to the hound family. They are recognizable for their long, sausage-like body and their short legs – giving them their trademark "weiner-dog" look! While many people mistakenly refer to Dachshunds as a type of terrier, they are actually a hound dog and share many similar traits. They are famously loyal and affectionate, intelligent and courageous, as well as mischievous and curious making them wonderful companions and beloved family members.
The Dachshund's coat is generally very short and dense, often featuring soft, smooth fur in colors of black, brown, tan and red. Its typical texture is flat and glossy, but wire-haired varieties may have slightly wiry fur. These breeds tend to shed very little and require minimal grooming. However, they may need occasional brushing and combing to maintain their wiry and sleek appearance. Some Dachshund types have a double coat while others may have a single layer fur.
Dachshunds should not to be fed foods that are high in fat, as this can cause digestive issues or even obesity. Moreover, chocolates and other sweets should not be given to Dachshunds since theobromine, the primary compound in chocolate, is toxic for dogs. Additionally, some people foods such as onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and avocados can be hazardous for dogs and should be avoided.
Before bringing home your new Dachshund, you should make sure your home is an inviting and safe environment for the pup. Start by setting up a comfortable bed for them in an area that will be their own special space. Puppy-proof the area by making sure any cords and wiring are moved out of the way, and anything that could be chewed or ingested removed. Establish rules about which areas of the house are off-limits and have clear expectations of where your pup should and shouldn’t go.
Dachshunds are small dogs, often referred to as "sausage dogs" due to their elongated, sausage-like shape. They typically range in size from 11– 32 pounds, making them smaller than most other breeds of dogs. When compared to the average dog, Dachshunds are certainly considered little, however, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes two size varieties of this breed. The standard Dachshund is larger than the miniature, ranging from 16 to 32 pounds, while the miniature Dachshund is 11 pounds or less.
Dachshunds can definitely be very active dogs. These loyal and brave pups were originally bred as hunting dogs, so their innate curiosity and determination predispose them to being quite lively. Generally, Dachshunds enjoy daily exercise, such as long walks, runs or vigorous playtime in the yard. However, their short legs do not tolerate extraordinarily strenuous activities. They tend to require less physical exercise than many other breeds and seem to have an innate ability to recognize their limits.
Dachshunds can make wonderful companions for families with children as they are friendly and intelligent dogs. A good fit for children of all ages, Dachshunds are known for their playful personalities that can bring lots of fun and laughter into a home. With routine training and proper socialization, parents can trust these dogs to have great relationships with their kids. It is, however, important to take into consideration the size of Dachshunds.
