Questions & Answers
Dachshunds possess many interesting qualities that make them unique and beloved dog companions. First of all, their diminutive size and elongated body make them stand out amongst their four-legged peers. Secondly, their affectionate and loyal nature especially to their humans is a characteristic that has endeared them to so many owners.
The Dachshund breed has some of the most unique looking coats. The most recognizable feature of the Dachshund coat is its length. It is typically thicker than a short-haired breed, but still remains relatively short and sleek. Descending from their hound ancestor, they can have a single-layered or a double-layered coat. The single-layered coat is the traditional flat coat whereas the double-layered coat is recognized as having a denser, softer undercoat with a straighter, longer outer layer of hair.
Owners of Dachshunds should avoid feeding their pet any foods that are high in fat, as too much fat can negatively impact a Dachshunds bones, joints, and overall health. Furthermore, foods that contain uncooked onions, garlic, chives, and other onions can be very hazardous to Dachshunds as they contain a substance called thiosulphate, which can destroy red blood cells in dogs (cats too!).
Before getting a Dachshund, you should obtain some essential items. Firstly, you should purchase a collar for the dog that has up-to-date tags attached. Make sure the collar fits snugly around your pup’s neck. You should also provide your pup with a comfortable bed or cushion to sleep on. Additionally, if you plan to travel with your pup, invest in a carrier of the appropriate size. Additionally, purchase appropriate food for your pup, and a food dish they can enjoy the food in.
Dachshunds usually reach a mature size between 8-9 inches for miniature and standard Dachshunds, and 11-12 inches for miniature long-haired and standard long-haired varieties. They typically weigh between 16-32 pounds and should reach full size between 12-15 months of age. Since miniature Dachshunds are a more recent crossbreed, their size may differ slightly. No matter what type of Dachshund you have, they will remain fairly small and easy to carry around.
Absolutely! Taking your Dachshund running is a great way to get exercise and make sure they are physically active. However, be sure to keep an eye on your pup's endurance level and intensity while running. Start off by taking walks and slowly build up to jogging or running. Do not over-exert your dog, and keep in mind that the natural frame and structure of a Dachshund may limit their ability to run a long distance.
Dachshunds often have the ability to get along with other pets, however, it depends on the individual Dachshund's personality and nature. Dachshunds are loyal companions and can form strong bonds with other dogs, cats, and other small pets in the family. In most cases, they have an outgoing personality, which makes them good candidates for forming social relationships with other animals.
Training a Dachshund can be challenging, as they can be very stubborn dogs. Generally speaking, any dog can be easy to train when you have the right methods and techniques in place. With that being said, it can be especially hard to training a Dachshund to listen and obey due to their independent nature. It is important to start with consistent training from the moment you bring them home so that a strong foundation can be built. To ensure the training is effective, use positive reinforcement, rewards, and high levels of engagement.
