Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are quite interesting as they are small and unique-looking dogs. They have long, low-set bodies and short legs so they are easy to distinguish from other breeds. Their personalities are very interesting, as they are often very loyal and affectionate and they are always alert and ready. Dachshunds often display a big-dog attitude despite their small size, and they can show intense loyalty to their owners. Additionally, they are energetic and active and can be great companions, even for those who live in small spaces.
Dachshunds have a coat of short, smooth fur that is glossy in appearance and usually reddish-brown to dark brown in color. While their fur isn't as long and luxurious as breeds like the golden retriever, it's still soft and silky, making them very pleasant to pet. The breed is also known for having longer "mascara-like" eye brows that add to their cuteness.
Dachshunds should not be given any food that is high in fat, such as pork, fatty cuts of beef, or organ meat as this can lead to weight gain and other health issues. Additionally, they should not feed grapes or raisins as they can be toxic and cause kidney failure, and many people believe onions, garlic, and avocado can also be toxic to certain breeds of dogs. It's best to feed them quality dog food formulated specifically for the breed, with lots of proteins but lower fat content.
If you're getting a Dachshund it's important to make sure you have all the essentials necessary to ensure your pup's health and safety. You need to purchase food and water bowls, food appropriate for the age and breed of your pup, a grooming brush, nail clippers, a canine toothbrush and toothpaste, a leash and collar, a good quality toy or two for chewing, and a bed or crate to provide a safe place for your pup to rest and relax. A brush and flea comb will also help keep your pup's fur looking great.
Dachshunds are traditionally considered a small breed of dog, typically weighing between 16-32 lbs. However, many Dachshunds have grown into larger sizes and may not fit the typical mold of a small dog. While they are not considered a "big" dog breed, they can vary in size and will still be classed as a Dachshund. Dachshunds are highly adaptable and can range from a couch potato, to a running and active breed.
Dachshunds may not be known for their prowess in the water, but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy a dip now and then. In fact, many Dachshunds can be encouraged to take a dip in the pool or swim in the lake with the proper encouragement and coaxing. Some Dachshunds may even surprise you with their natural swimming abilities. Of course, if a Dachshund isn't comfortable in the water, it's important not to force them and respect their wishes.
Generally, Dachshunds do get along very well with children when they have been socialized and exposed to them. Many Dachshund owners report that their dogs are gentle and patient with kids, and eager to please. Dachshunds are generally good-natured, friendly, and inquisitive which makes them fun and interactive pets. They are also easily trainable, which is beneficial because kids need to learn how to interact with and properly care for their pet. It's important to start the process early when introducing kids and Dachshunds.
Dachshunds are certainly considered to be very clever creatures! Their inquisitive nature means they're quite adept at understanding their environment, and as a result, they can be easily trained. Not only that, but they're also incredibly affectionate companions. People often find their sense of loyalty endearing, and they can even learn a few tricks here and there.
